online teaching
Presented by HEPCIT (Higher Education Partnerships
in Communication and Information Technology).
Implementing student-centred learning: moving beyond lecture notes
online
Date: Thursday, November 3
Venue: C1 Lecture theatre, Clayton campus
Keynote speaker: Prof Ron Oliver, Edith Cowan University
This one-day Showcase will build on the objectives and theme of this
year's HEPCIT events, to provide inspirational examples of practical
strategies to assist staff in implementing flexible, relevant and engaging
student-centred online teaching. Leading edge and innovative developments
in online teaching and learning will be presented by Monash University
staff. The Monash University Award for Excellence in Online Teaching
will be presented at the Showcase.

Keynote presentation: Online learning designs
that engage learners
This presentation will focus on a less obvious element of course
planning, that of learning designs. Learning designs describe the
strategies teachers choose to engage their learners to ensure an
effective learning setting. It will showcase examples of how technology
can be used to support their use and provide participants with useful
ideas and examples for choosing learning designs for their own teaching. |

Case-based assessment for clinical pharmacy students
This presentation will outline the case-based assessment program
used to provide an assignment for assessment of undergraduate pharmacy
students undertaking Clinical Pharmacy I and II. |

Case-based
learning for paramedic students (pdf, 1.43MB)
This paper will present the educational paradigm of case-based learning
(CBL) and highlight its use in the current Bachelor of Emergency
Health (BEH) degree offered by Monash University Centre for Ambulance
and Paramedic Studies (MUCAPS). |

Healthcare
scenarios in developmental disability medicine (pdf, 505kb)

developmental disability medicine for undergraduate medical students.
The product was produced through collaboration between the Centre

Promoting students' engagement online via reflection and
case studies
Introductory accounting units at Gippsland Campus have been involved
in a series of pilot programs involving the blending of print, WebCT
and online assessment activities based on reusable templates. |

Language
and learning online: redesigning for reusability (pdf, 825kb)
Language and Learning supports the teaching of the faculties by helping
students develop the academic skills they need to succeed within
their disciplines. This presentation will outline how faculty teaching
staff can access and use Language and Learning Online resources to
enhance student learning in their own MUSO subjects. |
Rosemary Clerehan, Rory Haddon |

Lunch |
| 1.45pm - 2.15pm |
Featured presentation: Making our own traditions:
the co-construction of flexible learning pedagogy
A significant body of international research has shown that participation
structures for supporting learning are culturally constructed and
enacted. How this research plays out for flexible learning (both
online and face-to-face) is not well understood. This session will
present a case study of the 'theory and practice' that was co-constructed
by staff and students in Singapore. |
Professor Marilyn Fleer and the Peninsula / Clayton team |
| 2.15pm - 3.15pm |
The
virtual practicum: online supervision of fieldwork
in the Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies, Singapore (pdf, 309kb)
This presentation describes and critiques the development of a 'virtual
practicum', where student demonstration of, and reflection on, their
developing practice is organised through internet-based strategies.
A key feature of this project is the use of weblogging by students
as a mode of reflection-on-action. |

The adventures of Trev the tablet: an online tabletting
unit for pharmacy students
Pharmacy students are required to understand the processes involved
in the physical preparation of pharmaceutical tablets. Due to increasing
student numbers, diminishing resources and the necessity to rotate
small groups of students through practical sessions (meaning practical
work rarely aligns with lectures), an alternative to the more traditional
methods of teaching this unit (lectures and practical sessions) was
sought. An interactive online tabletting unit, utilising video clips,
diagrams and self-assessing quizzes, was subsequently developed. |

u-Learning = e-Learning + m-Learning
In the USA the number of mobile phone connections now exceeds the
number of landline connections. Furthermore, this year there has
been a 25 percent decrease in world-wide PDA sales. These two facts
point to a consumer preference for the convergence of phones and
PDAs to mobile devices offering a combined functionality. |
