WHERE? Theatre 133 Berwick campus, teleconferenced to Gippsland campus, Theatre 5N104
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Anyone interested in issues concerning the quality of teaching and learning, and in particular its application in first year programming
Dianne Hagan is a lecturer in the Software Development Department and has been teaching computer programming for about 11 years, to students ranging from first year Computing students to Graduate Diploma students to the general public.
Much of the teaching she has done has been at the introductory programming level, and she has recently been involved in a collaborative project between the Software Development Department, the Computer Science Department and the Education Faculty which aims to improve the quality of teaching and learning in first year programming. This will be a repeat of Dianne's previous presentation for HEPCIT in 1996.
First year Computing students at Caulfield have a full set of WWW
documents containing all the course material for the subject, based
on a home page for the subject. This home page won the ASCILITE award
for "Best World Wide Web Project"
last year. It provides information
about the subject and staff (as written in the subject handbook),
all the handouts that are given in the lectures (i.e., copies of all
the overheads), specifications of all the weekly exercises,
assignment specifications and marking guides, format of pending
tests and assignments, a FAQ file, sample solutions to problems,
etc.
The home page also supplies help with particular programming
problems, an area for students to share code and help each other
with problems, an anonymous feedback area, an area for each tute
group to display its best work, and more.
