Our vision

We will create a vibrant atmosphere and visible cultural life on Monash's Clayton campus for students, staff and the surrounding community.

Tradition, innovation and a well-rounded music education are the touchstones of our School. Our desire is to strengthen our School's focus on new Australian composition and performance, and thus occupy a unique position among Australian universities.

Together with the the University's Centre for Theatre and Performance we want to be the creative arts hub of Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs, an area that is rich in cultural life but lacking in artistic venues.

Monash University and Cultural Engagement

We believe that a great university campus is a place where—alongside and as part of world-leading teaching and research—students, staff, and the wider community can experience, enjoy, and reflect upon the traditions and practices that create and sustain our cultural life.

Monash University therefore:

• recognises that a rich cultural life can contribute to the academic quality of many of its disciplines and the learning experience of its students
• affirms the value of intellectual, aesthetic and communal endeavours that enrich an educational and cultural experience beyond a chosen discipline of study.
• acknowledges its obligation to support cultural activities at its campuses, and where access to the arts might otherwise be limited.
• commits to the patronage and advancement of, and scholarship in, the arts through its academic, artistic and community engagement programmes and activities.
• facilitates the development of relevant and innovative visual and performance arts practices and encourages, where possible, engagement with leading external practitioners
• encourages creative projects that complement the teaching and research activities of relevant schools and teaching units.
• engages dynamically across its campus communities so as to encourage local, national and international relationships to flourish through cultural exchange.
• supports the work of relevant student clubs and societies, as well as outreach into the wider community through the promotion of public cultural events, and:
• aspires to make a major contribution to the cultural and intellectual life of local and national communities, especially where its campuses are based.
