How to apply - US financial aid
- Apply for your personal identification number (PIN) to e-sign a federal student aid application
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Monash University’s federal school code is G10914
(If you have applied for a federal student loan last year, you may be able to complete a Renewal FAFSA between November and December each year)
- FAFSA send your Student Aid Report (SAR) electronically to us. This document provides information on your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). We will use your SAR and EFC to decide how much financial aid you are eligible to receive based on the Cost of Attendance (COA)
- First time borrowers at each grade level must complete the Stafford and/or GradPLUS entrance counselling at Mapping Your Future
Select 'Australia' and 'Monash University – Melbourne, Australia, Commonwealth of'
- Complete a Stafford and/or GradPLUS Master Promissory Note (MPN). Monash University has an online service with ASA Direct to e-sign your MPN. American Student Assistance (ASA) is our preferred guarantor and has a list of preferred lenders
Alternatively, you may choose your own guarantor and contact them for a hardcopy MPN
- Print and complete the Monash financial aid application (pdf 49kb)
- Forward the completed application and required documentation to:

Borrowing limits
We will calculate your cost of attendance (COA) to determine your loan amount based on the following:
- Tuition fees (from your letter of offer)
- Overseas Student Health Cover
- Living expenses - approximately AUD$20,000 (inclusive of room & board, local travel, groceries etc)
- Computer costs - approximately AUD$1,500 (one-off)
- Other costs - approximately AUD$1,500 (books and supplies)
Students with dependents
Students with dependents may apply for an allowance for dependent care to be included in the COA by submitting supporting documentation. This allowance is based on the estimated expenses incurred (during class time, study time, fieldwork, internships and commuting time for the student) based on the number and age of the dependents. This is not to exceed the reasonable cost in the community for the type of care provided (Higher Education Act, 472). Approval depends on your EFC and eligibility.
Students with dual US and Australian/New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency must declare any financial support received from the Australian/New Zealand Government.
