Exam Performance

Feedback on Exam Performance

Access to your examination scripts

Staff are encouraged to give feedback to students on their performance in examinations. In such  discussions the staff member might refer to the student's examination script.

If students wish to inspect or have copies of their scripts, they should apply at the departmental or school office, where a time will be arranged for them to read through their scripts, or they will be given photocopies at a fee of $5 per script book for each examination.

Students may be denied access to their scripts if the examination is a short answer or multiple choice module which the examiner intends to use again.

Your examination scripts remain the property of Monash University. Examination scripts will usually be destroyed six months after the publication of the results of that examination.

Specific Faculty Rules

Faculty of Business and Economics

You should apply to the relevant administration officer to negotiate access to their examination script. You may be given photocopies at a fee of $5 per script book for each examination, or a time will be arranged for you to read through their scripts. The choice of procedure is decided by the chief examiner for the unit. You may be denied access to your scripts if the examination is a short-answer or a multiple-choice module. There is no requirement or obligation that feedback will be provided when students view their examination scripts, or that the mark obtained for each question will be shown on the script.

Faculty of Engineering

The following procedures have been formulated to address the needs of students who request feedback on performance in their examinations (these procedures are derived from the Monash University Freedom of Information Practices and Procedures):

  • For students who obtain a pass mark or better in the examination component of a unit - students may obtain a photocopy of their examination paper by written application through the departmental office. A charge of $5 per examination may be administered.
  • For students who obtain less than a pass mark in the examination component of a unit - staff are encouraged to give feedback to students on their performance and they will be allowed o read through their examination paper under supervision. These students may also buy a photocopy of their examination paper as set out above.

Normally, examination papers will be available for inspection up until the end of week 2 of the following semester.

Faculty of Law

If you want to see your examination scripts after the results have been published you should consult your lecturer in the first instance. The lecturer will normally allow you to read the examination script and discuss it with them. If you wish to obtain a copy of the examination script, this can be arranged by application through the faculty Student Services counter. A fee of $5 for each examination script will apply, and the copy of the paper will normally be available for collection from the counter within five days of lodging the application form.

Faculty of Science

If you have studied a unit taught by the Faculty of Science and wish to view your examination scripts, you should apply to the departmental/school office, where you may be given an opportunity to read through your script. Procedures for viewing scripts vary between schools and the choice of procedure will be decided by the unit chief examiner or unit/course leader. Freedom of Information requirements allow you to view your marked examination scripts if you request to do so, but you may be denied access to your scripts if the examination is a short-answer or multiple-choice format that the examiner intends to use again. Examination script books are routinely destroyed six months after the publication of results.

Communication with examiners

Examiners will not disclose marks to students prior to the official publication of results. However, after the results have been published, students who wish to discuss their examination performance in order to achieve improvement, should consult their lecturer or tutor.
