Constitutional Advancement in a Frozen Continent

Primary information

Date: Wednesday November 25, 2009
Time: 6-7 pm
Location: Monash University Law Chambers, 472 Bourke Street, Melbourne
Cost: Free
Description:

Book Launch:Constitutional Advancement in a Frozen Continent

Essays in Honour of George Winterton. Edited by Professor H P Lee and Dr Peter Gerangelos.

To be presented by The Honourable Sir Anthony Mason, AC KBE.

Australia has been called the 'frozen continent' for its many failures to effect changes to the Constitution via the rigid processes prescribed in section 128. Despite this, today the Australian polity wields broadranging national powers over most spheres of activities in Australia. The High Court of Australia plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the constitutional documentcontinues to be of relevance in an age of fastpaced modernity. Professor H P Lee (Monash University) and Dr Peter Gerangelos (University of Sydney) have jointly edited this special volume to honour Professor George Winterton who passed away on 6 November 2008 after a long and valiant battle against illness. A broad spectrum of distinguished legal scholars and jurists engage in thoughtful and critical exegesis to explain the continuing evolution of the Australian Constitution. The book stands as a mark of admiration and respect for an outstanding and inspirational scholar.
