Monash University School of Music and Conservatorium, Lunchtime Concert Series Presents "Traditional Folk and Classical Music from Afghanistan". International visiting artists John Baily and Veronica Doubleday come to Monash from London. They will present a program of traditional songs, instrumental dance pieces and classical music for the rubab learned from local musicians in Afghanistan. They will be joined by well-known tabla player Sam Evans.

As part of Sustainability Matters Month, enjoy a lunchtime concert by Rosie Burgess. Rosie has emerged on the Australian music scene to firmly secure a place for herself and her unique brand of urban folkroots music. Playing straight from the heart, Burgess consistently shows us why she is being called 'one of our country's best rising stars' (Coastfest 2008, NSW).

Enjoy listening to outstanding musicianship of the highest-achieving students from 2008. Students from the jazz, voice, woodwind, string and piano programs present a wonderful array of music from all eras.

A unique recital program featuring commissioned chamber music works for the Low Flutes. Peter Sheridan heads this group with instruments including the Alto, Bass, Contrabass, and gigantic Sub-Contrabass flutes. Come hear the lyrical, colourful, percussive and surprising tonal qualities of these most fascinating instruments. Compositions by Schocker, Hiscocks, Neher and others.

Tony Gould and Rob Burke have performed together for three decades. They will be performing original compositions as well as some standard jazz repertoire that is to be featured on a new CD release in 2009 through the Jazzhead record label.

Copland's extraordinarily engaging Emily Dickinson songs are combined here with readings of poetry and the world premiere of Australian Composer, Peter Campbell's song cycle, an Avian Miscellany. Join Louisa Hunter-Bradley (soprano), Cameron Menzies (actor) and Dean Sky-Lucas (piano) on a discovery of these special tonal images.

Music from ancient Persia, the Payvar Ensemble, led by Qmars Piraglu, will play solo and ensemble works by the famous Iranian composers Payvar, Meshkatian and Alizadeh. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to hear music with a history that goes back thousands of years.

Featuring the Monash Academy Orchestra directed by Jeffrey Crellin and presenting three of Australia's acclaimed opera stars, it is sure to be one of the music highlights of the year.

The program features not only some of the most loved and thrilling arias from Wagner, Verdi and Bizet, but also the complete first act of Puccini's TOSCA . With guest artists, boys choir and mixed chorus, along with Michael Lewis as Scarpia, Nicole Youl in the title role, and Rosario La Spina as Cavaradossi and performed in the superb acoustics of Robert Blackwood Hall, this will be a memorable evening of music making at its finest.

As with previous years, Monash Jazz studies will be presenting an international jazz artist that will be an artist in residence at the School of Music (currently in final negotiations). This is a wonderful opportunity to hear one of the international greats of jazz here at Monash University.

Monash World Music Orchestra

This orchestra embraces a cross section of music influences and languages from various cultures in the true spirit of contemporary Australian society. Part of its uniqueness lies in its use of a wide variety of instruments, both old and modern, and arrangements which marry beautifully the diverse makeup of the ensemble and the myriad of resources from which it draws material and inspiration.

Stage Band:
A decade in existence, this band of eighteen musicians plays a repertoire that gives the students a strong historical understanding of the large jazz ensembles as well as performing new works from Australian and overseas composers. We hope you enjoy this powerful and dynamic performance.

Directed by the energetic and exciting David Griffiths, the Monash Wind Symphony is a large wind and percussion ensemble comprising students from the Monash University School of Music - Conservatorium and the wider Monash community. They will present a colourful concert of music from around the world that will be sure to get your toes tapping.

Experience the unique blend of folk, pop and classical music which has enchanted audiences of all ages Australia wide. Having just returned from their whirlwind national tour, young Melbourne trio Me and the Grownups showcase a selection of compositions from their tirelessly original repertoire -- featuring the astoundingly beautiful lyrics composed by singer, songwriter and artist Anita Lester.

As part of the Monash University Open Day celebrations for 2009, the Monash Academy Orchestra directed by Jeffrey Crellin performs a special afternoon concert in Robert Blackwood Hall. We are delighted to welcome acclaimed Australian pianist Michael Kieran Harvey to perform George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Michael is one of Australia's most celebrated performers, with a prodigious reputation not only as a champion of new music, but also as one of the most exciting pianists of his generation.

The major orchestral work on the program is Rimsky-Korsokov's masterpiece of orchestral sound painting, Scheherazade.

Performance duration 1 hour and 45 minutes including an interval.

The Monash University School of Music Conservatorium presents 'A Songathon'. This is a Community Awareness programme presented by all the students of Classical Voice at Clayton Campus. Settings of Shakespeare's text by varied composers will be performed. Please help us raise funds for the Creative Connections programme at Bethlehem hospital to continue. This supports grieving children, young people and their families through music and art therapy, clinical psychology and social work.

Collaboration 4 Change presents The South African Zulu Choir.

Come on a musical journey of perseverance, hope and inspiration. This incredible Choir will tell the story of South Africa through a wide variety of music including: traditional Zulu, township jive, songs from the apartheid era, modern gospel, R&B/soul and much more. Witness first hand the African spirit that has seen South Africa triumph over adversity and become a 'rainbow nation'.

The South African Zulu Choir will bring their music to Australians of all ages during a three-week tour in August and September that will include Victoria, NSW, ACT and Western Australia. The Choir's major public concert in Melbourne will take place at the Robert Blackwood Concert Hall at Monash University on Sunday 30th August at 2pm.

The South African Zulu Choir is coming to Australia as part of Collaboration 4 Change (C4C), a global movement that is creating positive social change through music. All profits from the tour will go to support sustainable education programs in South Africa.

'Collaboration 4 Change: Australia' is an initiative of Key Change Music and The Oaktree Foundation, and has been made possible by the generous support of the Foundation for Young Australians, the Australian Youth Forum, and Monash University, as well as media partnerships with MTV, MySpace and NOVA. An invitation to the fascinating world of Czech and Romanian music. The long established partnership of eminent Monash musicians Tamara Smolyar (piano) and Ivana Tomaskova (violin) brings an unforgettable flavour in a programme of chamber works by Petr Eben, Bohuslav Martinu, Tiberiu Olah and Livia Teodorescu-Ciocǎnea.

Monash University is proud to present two of the top young jazz musicians residing in New York. Bassist Linda May-Han Oh lived and studied in Perth before moving to the US, and is joined by the drummer Tommy Crane. Both musicians have performed with top musicians including Greg Osby and Jeremy Pelt as well as their own high profile experimental projects.

Ryan Cayabyab is a renowned Filipino Composer, Conductor, Arranger, Pianist & Singer. His Genre includes Classical, Pop, Jazz and Religious. His works range from commissioned full-length ballets, theater musicals, choral pieces, a Mass set to unaccompanied chorus, and orchestral pieces, to commercial recordings of popular music, film scores and television specials.

He was the Executive and Artistic Director of the defunct San Miguel Foundation for the Performing Arts. He was also a resident judge for the only season of Philippine Idol in 2006. Cayayab's current project includes the Ryan Cayabyab Singers (RCS), a group of seven young adult singers comparable to his prior group Smokey Mountain. The Smokey Mountain Chorale Group in the early 1990's was a group of Youth living in a Squatter Community near a Mountain of Rubbish. After Cayabyab trained them, Smokey Mountain became famous and produced popular and award winning songs.

As music director, conductor and accompanist, he has performed with leading Philippine music personalities at Avery Fisher Hall in the Lincoln Center in New York City; Carnegie Hall (both the Main and Recital halls) in New York; the Kennedy Center and the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.; the Shrine in Los Angeles; the Orpheum in Vancouver; even at the Circus Maximus of the Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip. Ryan Cayabyab is a laureate of the Onassis International Cultural Competitions (2nd Prize), having won for original music composition for dance (2001). Ryan Cayabyab and his Singers perform in Melbourne to raise funds for the poorest of the poor in the Philippines through Gawad Kalinga (GK).
