Monash University School of Music and Conservatorium, Lunchtime Concert Series Presents "Traditional Folk and Classical Music from Afghanistan". International visiting artists John Baily and Veronica Doubleday come to Monash from London. They will present a program of traditional songs, instrumental dance pieces and classical music for the rubab learned from local musicians in Afghanistan. They will be joined by well-known tabla player Sam Evans.

This orchestra embraces a cross section of music influences and languages from various cultures in the true spirit of contemporary Australian society. Stage Band:

As part of the Monash University Open Day celebrations for 2009, the Monash Academy Orchestra directed by Jeffrey Crellin performs a special afternoon concert in Robert Blackwood Hall. We are delighted to welcome acclaimed Australian pianist Michael Kieran Harvey to perform George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Michael is one of Australia's most celebrated performers, with a prodigious reputation not only as a champion of new music, but also as one of the most exciting pianists of his generation.

The major orchestral work on the program is Rimsky-Korsokov's masterpiece of orchestral sound painting, Scheherazade.

Performance duration 1 hour and 45 minutes including an interval.

South African Zulu Choir

Collaboration 4 Change presents The South African Zulu Choir.

Come on a musical journey of perseverance, hope and inspiration. This incredible Choir will tell the story of South Africa through a wide variety of music including: traditional Zulu, township jive, songs from the apartheid era, modern gospel, R&B/soul and much more. Witness first hand the African spirit that has seen South Africa triumph over adversity and become a 'rainbow nation'.

The South African Zulu Choir will bring their music to Australians of all ages during a three-week tour in August and September that will include Victoria, NSW, ACT and Western Australia. The Choir's major public concert in Melbourne will take place at the Robert Blackwood Concert Hall at Monash University on Sunday 30th August at 2pm.

The South African Zulu Choir is coming to Australia as part of Collaboration 4 Change (C4C), a global movement that is creating positive social change through music. All profits from the tour will go to support sustainable education programs in South Africa.

Ryan Cayabyab & Singers

Description:

Ryan Cayabyab is a renowned Filipino Composer, Conductor, Arranger, Pianist & Singer. His Genre includes Classical, Pop, Jazz and Religious. His works range from commissioned full-length ballets, theater musicals, choral pieces, a Mass set to unaccompanied chorus, and orchestral pieces, to commercial recordings of popular music, film scores and television specials.

He was the Executive and Artistic Director of the defunct San Miguel Foundation for the Performing Arts. He was also a resident judge for the only season of Philippine Idol in 2006. Cayayab's current project includes the Ryan Cayabyab Singers (RCS), a group of seven young adult singers comparable to his prior group Smokey Mountain. The Smokey Mountain Chorale Group in the early 1990's was a group of Youth living in a Squatter Community near a Mountain of Rubbish. After Cayabyab trained them, Smokey Mountain became famous and produced popular and award winning songs.

As music director, conductor and accompanist, he has performed with leading Philippine music personalities at Avery Fisher Hall in the Lincoln Center in New York City; Carnegie Hall (both the Main and Recital halls) in New York; the Kennedy Center and the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.; the Shrine in Los Angeles; the Orpheum in Vancouver; even at the Circus Maximus of the Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip. Ryan Cayabyab is a laureate of the Onassis International Cultural Competitions (2nd Prize), having won for original music composition for dance (2001). Ryan Cayabyab and his Singers perform in Melbourne to raise funds for the poorest of the poor in the Philippines through Gawad Kalinga (GK).
