Bill Kent Memorial Essay Competition in European and EU StudiesThe competition is open to all students at Monash University, and is funded by MEEUC via a grant from the European Commission. Monash University Honours and postgraduate students in the faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, and Law, are particularly welcome to apply. Essays should focus on recent developments in Europe and the European Union and should be between 4,000 and 6,000 words in length. In 2011 Emma Shortis’s essay “The European Union, the Arab Spring and the Libyan Crisis: Reformulating the European Neighbourhood Policy” won her first prize and $500. Erdinc Ozyurek’s paper “Free-trade suggests the enlargement of a regional economic group such as the European Union EU) should be beneficial for all its member states” and Siobhan Edminson’s piece on “Free movement of persons in the European Union of 2011: for immigrants, asylum seekers, and EU citizens” tied for second place, and were both awarded $300. Essays are assessed by a panel of judges selected by the Monash European and EU Centre, and winners notified by email. Winning essays are considered for publication in the Centre’s new electronic working papers or in a suitable academic journal or book, including the Australian and New Zealand Journal of European Studies. To enter when the competition is open, email your essay together with your name, address, Faculty, and level of study to the MEEUC administrative officer. This annual essay competition has been re-named in honour of the late Emeritus Professor Bill Kent, foundation Director of the Monash University Prato Centre, and member and friend of the MEEUC Other Prize OpportunitiesPrizes for outstanding 2010 undergraduate results in European Studies were awarded to Kaitlyn Gaudion (best first year results) and to Bridget Fitzgerald (best second year results) at a reception hosted by H.E. Ambassador David Daly in September 2011. These prizes are generously sponsored by the Delegation of the European Union in Canberra.
