Diplomas in European Studies

A diploma in European studies is available to students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It is identical in structure to a major sequence in European Studies. It is designed to allow undergraduate students to study European Studies concurrently with their bachelor studies. It allows graduate students to acquire qualifications in European studies if they did not do European studies as part of their undergraduate degree.

Students taking the Diploma or Graduate Diploma in European Studies will learn about the Europe of today, its evolution toward political, economic and cultural integration, and the structures and processes involved in this evolution. They will also deepen their awareness of the role of European thought and culture in shaping the modern world. The Diploma may be of special interest to students in a wide range of disciplines who, in addition to their primary specialisation, wish to acquire expertise in the area of contemporary Europe.

Eligibility

The Undergraduate Diploma in European Studies may be taken by:

  • Monash University students enrolled in any undergraduate degree with permission from their home Faculty
  • Undergraduate students enrolled in any undergraduate degree at another university

The Graduate Diploma in European Studies may be taken by students having graduated in any degree at Monash University to another university. It is however not available to students who studies European Studies at Monash as part of their undergraduate studies.

Duration

The Undergraduate Diploma in European Studies is taken concurrently with another degree and normally adds between one semester and one year to the total time taken to complete undergraduate study.

Credit toward other studies

Monash undergraduate students taking the Diploma in European Studies may be able to credit up to 50% (24 credit points) of the Diploma to their main undergraduate degree.

Study in Europe

Monash University encourages students to broaden their experience by studying overseas. For those specialising in European Studies, the opportunity to study abroad is especially valuable. In addition to the Monash University Centres in Prato and London, students may choose to study at any of the more than 60 European universities with which Monash has exchange agreements.

Students normally make arrangements for study in Europe through Monash Abroad and in consultation with the Centre for European Studies.
