Our mission

The mission of the Monash European and EU Centre is to:

  • Explore the significance of the European Union (EU) and its peoples not only in Europe and the EU ’s neighbouring countries, but also on the wider international scene, including in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, the US and Africa
  • Promote excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels with a view to giving the best competitive edge to its graduates in finding attractive employment opportunities
  • Undertake top quality research on Europe and the EU on the international stage
  • Encourage international research exchanges and collaborations on Europe-related matters between researchers in Australia and selected universities in Europe, the Asia-Pacific and internationally
  • Maintain close contact with other centres or organizations concerned with European and EU studies in Australia and New Zealand
  • Highlight Europe’s cultural, social, linguistic and intellectual heritage as reflected in the diversity of its peoples
  • Collaborate with communities of European origin in Australia to contribute to raising knowledge of and interest in their activities, their languages and cultures
