European Studies at Monash UniversityEuropean Studies is a field of knowledge whose object is Europe: its present, its past and its possible futures; Europe's peoples and nations, individually and in relation to each other; Europe's cultures and its political and economic life; and the relationships that link Europe to the rest of the world. European Studies pays special attention to the Europe of today, its evolution toward political, economic and cultural integration, and the structures and processes that are involved in this evolution. The member states of European Union, as well as the countries that aspire to join it, on the other are therefore important foci of our discipline. Monash European and EU CentreAt Monash, European Studies is taught by the Monash European and EU Centre. The multidisciplinary Centre funded jointly by the European Union and Monash University, is a collaborative venture between the Faculties of Business and Economics and Law as well as Arts. At Monash, students may take a minor, a major or individual units in European Studies, depending on their own plans and the rules of the degree for which they are enrolled. At fourth-year level students may enrol for Honours in European Studies, or in European Studies combined with another approved discipline. At the graduate level, students may enrol into the new multidisciplinary coursework Master in European and International Studies and also be supervised for the degrees of M.A. or Ph.D. by research in European Studies. They can also enrol in the graduate diploma in European studies. European Studies and European LanguagesIt is recommended that students study a European language in parallel to their work in European Studies. Such a combination, which allows a student to link the study of European subject matter to the development of communicative skills in a relevant language, is vocationally even more advantageous than the study of a European language or of European Studies alone. The following European languages are offered by the School of Languages,Cultures and Linguistics at Monash: French, German, Italian, Spanish and Ukrainian. All may be studied from the post-VCE or the beginners' language level. |
