Public Seminar 10th March - Ewan Birney Tour: Bioinformatics for the Future

The Monash e-Research Centre (MeRC) and the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) are excited to host the following seminar, as part of an Australian tour by Professor Ewan Birney – sponsored by EMBL Australia (European Molecular Biology Laboratory Australia) and supported by the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences, and the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science & Research:

The acceleration in volume of biomolecular and life science data (produced by the latest research equipment) is resulting in unique opportunities for today’s researchers, as well as potential for novel collaborations between disciplines.  This seminar will highlight current developments in bioinformatics, and provide some personal and significant research experiences of scientists from Australia and Europe.

The key speaker, Professor Ewan Birney, is a Senior Scientist with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).  Professor Birney is one of the founders of ‘Ensembl’ – a project which is analysing large metazoan genomes, in particular human and mouse – and is a recipient of the 2005 Benjamin Franklin Award for contributions in Open Source Bioinfomatics, the 2005 Chris Overton Prize (from ICSB) and the 2003 Francis Crick Award from the Royal Society.
