Capabilities

e‑Research is the application and use of advanced ICT and data management technologies to facilitate research and research collaboration within and between institutions locally and internationally.

e-Research leadership and research and development

Monash is a leader in the development and application of e‑Research, in particular through the following programmes:

• ARROW, DART, ARCHER and ANDS e‑Research data management systems developments;
• NIMROD, GriddLeS and Guard high performance distributed Grid computing e‑Research systems developments; and
• VeRSI e‑Research application case studies and awareness raising projects.

e-Research infrastructure

Monash IT Services Division has established:

• a petabyte data store (LaRDS) specifically for storing and preserving large research data sets;
• a 214 CPU high performance compute grid cluster (MSG);
• together with the 206 CPU HPC compute grid cluster (‘brecca’) ex VPAC; and
• a very high performance gigabit network to all workstations, campuses and the internet.

Monash researchers also have access to APAC and VPAC high performance computing services.

e-Research publication services

The Monash Library maintains the Monash University ARROW repository which is a digital archive for Monash University's research output.  ARROW contains published articles, working papers, conference proceedings, historic photographs and PhD theses.  Its purpose is to store the research publications of Monash academic staff and postgraduate students and to promote global online access to that content.

e-Research applications

Monash is working to apply e-Research techniques and services to assist key research groups across many disciplines at Monash.

Monash is also integrating e‑Research capabilities into major research facilities existing and being established at Clayton:

• Australian Synchrotron
• Clinical imaging facility
• Monash electron microscopy facility
• Monash optical microscopy facility
• Wind tunnel
