NCRIS Activities at Monash

The National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) is a major Australian Government funding initiative to support Australian research infrastructure.  Monash is involved in a number of NCRIS activities:

AeRIC – Australian e-Research Infrastructure Council

Cathrine Harboe-Ree (University Librarian) and Alan McMeekin (Executive Director, Information Technology Services) are both members of the AeRIC, the governing body for the NCRIS Platforms for Collaboration (PfC) capability.

ANDS – Australian National Data Service

Monash is the lead agency to administer and drive the establishment of the PfC ANDS activity.  For further information please contact Dr Andrew Treloar (Director, ANDS Establishment Project).  Prof. Paul Bonnington (Director, Monash e-Research Centre), is the chair of the ANDS Establishment Steering Committee.

ANFF – Australian National Fabrication Facility

Monash is the lead agency for the Victorian node of the ANFF, the Melbourne Centre for Nanotechnology.  The ANFF national headquarters also operates from this office.  These activities are co-located with the Monash Institute for Nanosciences Materials and Manufacture.

ARCS – Australian Research Collaboration Service

Prof. Paul Bonnington (Director, Monash e-Research Centre) is a member of the PfC ARCS advanced video conferencing and collaboration working group.

AuScope – Structure and Evolution of the Australian Continent

The Victorian node of AuScope, Simulation and Modelling Victoria, is led and hosted by Monash under the direction of Associate Professor Louis Moresi.  Also participating is a team of VPAC staff co-located at the Monash Clayton campus.

AAF – Australian Access Federation

Monash participated in the establishment of the MAMS Testbed Federation in 2006 and will adopt AAF services later in the year, when they become available.  Prof. Paul Bonnington (Director, Monash e-Research Centre) is a member of the AAF GRID Working Group.

Australia’s Associate Membership of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

NCRIS is joining with four Go8 universities (UWA, UQ, USydney and Monash) and CSIRO to fund Australia’s Associate membership of EMBL.  Monash has been assigned as the lead institute to progress a number of scientific activities designed to capitalise on this unique membership status (Australia is the first nation outside Europe to be afforded Associate membership status.)  These activities operate from Monash’s Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) offices.

NeAT - National eResearch Architecture Taskforce

NeAT aims to assist in the development and adoption of new and innovative methods of applying e-Research, as well as support the development of new tools and technologies for researchers. David Abramson and Andrew Treloar are members of the NeAT.
