M-eNotes

M-eNotes is being developed to meet the needs of a MISCL specification to replace their formal paper-based lab record books, and more broadly for other research groups, such as in the biological sciences.  Key features of M‑eNotes include:

  • MS-Word based – built around the familiar Microsoft Word desktop application environment;
  • Formal non-repudiation – content can be locked and digitally signed;
  • Standards – all content is stored in XML to an ISO standard;
  • File formats preserved – research results including large data files are maintained in their original formats and are not absorbed into the MS‑Word file – content is not locked in a proprietary format, which is an important requirement for researchers widely.
  • Fully integrated with OneNote 2007 and EndNote.
  • Stores both video and audio data
  • Full integration with Tablet PCs supporting both handwritten text and drawings, and, optical character recognition.

A networked pilot application has now been developed and deployed for trials to MISCL and ARMI, with DEPM and MMI coming online soon. The pilot is a fully operational application, where scientists and researchers are able, on a daily basis, to formulate and update their experiment notebooks electronically.
