Identity Management for Researchers (IMR) Project

A 2009 project to improve identity management and related systems at Monash so as to better meet the needs of researchers, research students and research collaborators external to Monash.  The project consists of two sub-projects:

  • Provide staff IT services to Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students so that their IT accounts, attributes, access rights, etc, are by default as for academic staff, as appropriate (except for security, financial, supervisory or other restricted access rights) and to establish uniformity between faculties.

  • Implement the Australian Access Federation (AAF) at Monash so that Monash researchers can easily collaborate with external colleagues by accessing e-Research capabilities at all participating institutions nationally and internationally that participate in the AAF “federated authentication” regime, and similar peer initiatives internationally. This sub-project includes:
    • Deploying pilot and production AAF services at Monash and joining the pilot and production AAF federations, so that Monash researchers can access e‑Research systems at other participating institutions nationally, and eventually internationally;
    • “Shibbolising” (i.e. adapting for connection to the AAF federated authentication system) a variety of Monash e-Research services and applications, such as the Monash Sakai virtual research environment, so that research collaborators at other institutions can access Monash e-Research systems and hence collaborate seamlessly with their Monash colleagues;
    • “Shibbolising” the my.monash portal, so that Monash researchers, including HDR students, and research collaborators at other institutions can easily access Monash e-Research systems from a single web workspace featuring single sign-on (SSO) capability.
