Disability Liaison Unit Privacy Statement

The Disability Liaison Unit (DLU) collects and maintains personal and health information in accordance with the Information Privacy Act 2000, the Health Records Act 2001 and the Monash University Privacy Policy. Copies of these Acts and the University Policy can be located on the Privacy website www.privacy.monash.edu.au

The DLU collects and stores information securely for the purpose of providing services including advice, referral, and direct support. The collection of this information assists us to identify reasonable adjustments under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and Disability Standards for Education 2005 and to provide support services to students registered with the DLU to implement reasonable adjustments in their education at Monash University. We also collect information for planning, funding, monitoring and evaluating our services, but where practicable we remove identifying details from information used for these purposes. The DLU may also use and disclose your personal and/or health information to mitigate a serious risk to your health or safety, or that of another person.

Students registering with the DLU:

  • have the right to disclose to the DLU only the information they feel comfortable to release.*
  • will be asked to sign a ‘Student Declaration’ on the DLU Registration Form, indicating they have read this privacy statement and giving a Disability Liaison Officer permission to communicate, as necessary to perform the functions of the DLU, with their treating health professional/s, the Examination Unit organising the student’s assessment, Lecturers teaching the student, Tutors instructing the student, Faculty staff responsible for the administration arrangements necessary to support the accommodations and related arrangements proposed for the student, Open University Australia staff and their Examination Service Provider and to access the Monash University student database to verify enrolment details.

This authorisation is valid for the time specified on the form, and the student can revoke their consent at any time in writing.  If consent is not forthcoming, or is revoked, the DLU may be unable to provide services to the student.

You have a right to access personal information that Monash University holds about you, subject to any exceptions in relevant legislation. If you wish to seek access to your personal information held by the DLU, please contact the University Privacy Officer at privacyofficer@adm.monash.edu.au.

*A student can limit the information they provide the DLU or choose not to provide consent to share information, but this may restrict the DLU’s capacity to provide reasonable accommodations.
