The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an internationally-accepted test of English language proficiency used by academic institutions, governments and professional organisations as an assessment of English language proficiency.
The IELTS Preparation course is for students who:
- require an IELTS score for entry to a tertiary institution
- need to provide evidence of proof of language proficiency.

The IELTS Preparation Course at Monash will help you understand the IELTS test and equip you with the skills and strategies necessary to achieve the score you require to progress your career.
This full-time course is offered in five-week modules. We can offer you the flexibility of:
- Study location – Clayton, Caulfield or Queen Street (CBD)* campuses
- Tuition time – currently classes are held from 8.30 am to 12.45 pm or from 12.45 pm to 5 pm^ resulting in a study load of 20 hours contact hours per week.
Classes focus on:
- developing knowledge of Academic English
- improving the students’ ability to use the language in the four sections of the IELTS test: reading, writing, listening and speaking
- developing IELTS Preparation workshops
In addition, the cost of one IELTS test is included in the course, currently valued at A$240 and students are provided with an i-Learn Diary to assist them in advancing their independent study skills.
* City location at Queen Street is subject to availability, where all places have been filled, students will be offered the Caulfield location.

On successful completion of the Course you will have:
- learnt about the exam and its component tests
- developed test-taking strategies for the IELTS exam
- undertaken tests under exam conditions using past papers with detailed answer guides and teacher feedback
- used the latest IELTS preparation materials and centre's full range of independent learning resources
- improved your IELTS test skills using our unique i-Learn Diary and Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) programs.

Tuition fees must be paid prior to commencement and are based on the number of five-week modules you study.
You will need to pay:
- an enrolment fee of A$200
- tuition fees^
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC):
- up to 3 months (single) A$ 88
- up to 3 months (family) A$176

Students applying for the IELTS Preparation Course are required to have:
- a minimum overall IELTS test score of 4.5 or equivalent, or
- a minimum of intermediate level in the 'placement test' at Monash University English Language Centre.
Depending on English proficiency, students will be placed in one of the three levels of the IELTS Preparation Course available:
- Intermediate: minimum entry level approximately IELTS 4.5
- Upper intermediate: minimum entry level approximately IELTS 5.0
- Advanced: minimum entry level approximately IELTS 5.5.
