Introductory Academic Program (IAP)

The Introductory Academic Program (IAP) is an intensive five-week, full-time program designed to prepare students for social, cultural and academic life at Monash University.

Through the program you will become familiar with academic expectations and issues involved in studying at Monash University.

Who is this course for?

The Introductory Academic Program is for international students who have received a Full Offer to study at Monash University and want to develop skills in:

  • academic vocabulary
  • critical thinking
  • independent learning
  • lecture note-taking.

About the program

The five-week, full-time, intensive program is run twice a year prior to university semester commencement.

Classes are held Monday to Friday, 9 am – 5 pm (25 hours per week), at the Monash University Clayton campus.

The program is designed to:

  • prepare you for social, cultural and academic life at Monash University
  • train you for intensive academic skills training.

Fees

The program costs A$1950, which covers the enrolment fee and all tuition.

In addition, students are required to take out Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC):

  • up to 3 months (single) A$ 88
  • up to 3 months (family) A$176

How to apply?

International students can apply for admission to the Introductory Academic Program only when receiving a Full Offer to study at Monash University.

To apply for the Introductory Academic Program, simply follow these steps:

  1. Download and complete the Monash University English Language Centre Application Form

Success

Student progression rates (the percentage of students passing units and progressing to the next year of their course) demonstrate that international students who undertake the IAP perform better in their university course subjects.

Students who studied IAP recorded an average progression rate of 95 % compared to 88.3% for all Monash University students (2006).
