The English for Academic Preparation (EAP) course is an intensive program designed to equip applicants with the English language skills required for tertiary study in Australia.
The EAP course also offers a study pathway specifically designed to enhance the opportunity for entry into Monash University and Monash College either directly or after completion of the English Language Bridging Program (ELBP)

The English for Academic Preparation course is suitable for students who wish to:
- study at Monash University or another tertiary institutions in Australia
- gain access to Monash College Diploma programs
- study academic English prior to commencement of a test preparation course (i.e. IELTS, TOEFL)
- study on the English Language Bridging Program
- improve both their academic and English Language skills

The program is full-time course offered in five week modules. It is anticipated that most students will take 10 weeks to progress to the next level.
Classes will be held at Caulfield, campus from 8.30am – 12.45 or 12.45 - 5 pm, Monday to Friday
The weekly study load is 20 hours in-class tuition and 10 hours outside class consisting of:
- skills development workshops
- i-Learn academic support kit
- classroom extenstion activities/homework.

Classes focus on introducing students to the academic conventions, academic expectations and learning strategies required at tertiary level.
There are five levels of English for Academic Preparation. The levels are:
- EAP 2: Elementary (minimum entry level approximately IELTS 3.5)
- EAP 3: Pre-intermediate (minimum entry level approximately IELTS 4.0)
- EAP 4: Intermediate (minimum entry level IELTS 4.5)
- EAP 5: Upper intermediate level (minimum entry level IELTS 5.0)
- EAP 6: Advanced level (minimum entry level IELTS 5.5)
At the end of each level, students undertake a Monash test to get into the next EAP level. Students wishing to enrol in the English Language Bridging Program need to achieve an appropriate IELTS score before being accepted in the program.

By successfully completing this program you will:
- raised your level of competence in all English language skills areas (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) and increase you confidence in using English within an academic context
- learnt the academic conventions, academic expectations and learning strategies required to succeed at tertiary level
- enhanced your English skills through personalised and specifically designed workshops
- received practical and effective preparation for the demands of academic life at Monash
- adjusted to the academic and cultural conventions of English-speaking societies
- undertaken an IELTS test, included in the tuition fee.

Admission and placement into the different EAP levels depend on:
- your IELTS or TOEFL result, or
- the result of your 'placement test' at Monash University English Language Centre.
Note: you will need to sit the placement test before you begin the course if you do not have a current IELTS or TOEFL result.

Every task in the program covers a wide range of English skills.
The skills you will enhance include:
- study and learning strategies
- research project work
- report and essay writing, listening skills and lecture note taking
- seminar and debate presentation strategies.

To successfully complete EAP you must undertake a series of tasks that test your ability to use English for academic studies.
Assessment tasks reflect the course work you will do at Monash or other higher education institution course.
Tasks and assessments include:
- research assignments
- written reports
- class presentations
- class debates.
Students are assessed continually throughout the program using checklists that show their strengths and weaknesses in each one of the skill areas.

In addition to the independent learning expertise, resources and facilities at the Centre, every student will benefit from one of our innovative i-Learn Diary.
Each diary is a program of guided independent learning designed to support your first five weeks of study.
You will gain practice across the whole range of independent learning activities available in the Centre.
These are designed to help you improve:
- your control of academic English
- your independent learning skills.
These activities are organised around three themes:
- learning strategies
- language focus
- e-Learning.
Your class teacher and Independent Learning Centre tutors are there to assist you and will monitor your progress.

Tuition fees must be paid prior to commencement and are based on the number of five-week modules you study.
You must also budget for compulsory Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), and your accommodation and living expenses.
Tuition fees are A$370 per week (A$1,850 per module) plus a one-off enrolment fee of A$200.
