Monash Passport: Choose video text version

Adam Shoemaker: Monash University isn't just the largest in this country, it's also the most diverse, the most international and I think the most interesting. Imagine being able to study in double degrees, to study full time, part time, any mode you like and to do so in a way which is tailored to your individual aspirations. That's Monash.

Narration: For a lot of people choosing one career path is difficult enough but for students like Fiona Lander two degrees are definitely better than one.

Choice and flexibility are central to the academic experience at Monash and in fact close to one in five undergraduates are enrolled in double degrees. Fiona is doing both law and medicine.

Fiona Lander: Well firstly medicine turned out to be not as demanding as I thought although it was challenging and really interesting. The work load wasn't as extreme as I thought so I decided I would really like to pursue law particularly as part of our first year medical degree we do a series of medico-legal tutorials. I found that I was really interested in these. I was constantly debating our tutor and I thought this is something I was really interested in.

Narration: A placement working in the emergency department at a major hospital is extremely challenging but rewarding at the same time.

Fiona Lander: In some ways it's really fun. It's really nice to be interacting with people from all sorts of medical specialities and getting an insight into where you might be potentially working one day. That's probably one of the best things that happens in final year.

Narration: The two subjects have much more in common than it appears at first glance. The growth in medical law and the commercialisation of new technologies highlights the need for graduates to have a grounding in both professions.

Fiona Lander: I think that's one of the things that's made my experience here really terrific because I feel as though both of my faculties have my best interests at heart and are really willing to encourage me to do something a little outside the square if it's going to extend and challenge me in a way that the normal course structure won't.

Narration: For anyone thinking of taking a double degree at Monash, Fiona has this advice.

Fiona Lander: University days can be the best days of your life. I've had the most wonderful time while I've been here and I don't think it was a problem at all that I've taken so long to do my degrees because I've got to do an exchange, go travelling, I've worked in all sorts of different hospital around Melbourne, I've had a couple of years off studied law exclusively and gotten involved in the student society and the Monash Student Association as well. All of these things have added to my experience.

Narration: And her time so far at Monash has been memorable for being involved a whole range of experiences.

Fiona Lander: Well firstly come to Monash because it's fantastic. I'm seven years in and I just love going to university here. The teaching staff are amazing, they're really encouraging. The atmosphere on campus is fantastic and it's really nice having all of my memories in the one place.
