Common reactions to a crisis

It is normal to have a reaction, even if you were not directly involved in the crisis events. Symptoms can appear after a few hours, days or even months. And they can last different lengths of time.

Common reactions include:

  • Emotional reactions like shock, disbelief, numbness, fear, worry, anger, sadness, denial, helplessness, guilt or shame

  • Physical reactions like sleeping problems, headaches, aches and pains, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, breathing problems, palpitations, sweating, trembling, agitation, muscle tension or being easily startled by noises

  • Mental reactions like flashbacks, thoughts or images about the event, nightmares, problems concentrating or making decisions, confusion, poor memory or slowed thinking

There is no right or wrong way to feel. Your reaction is valid and you need to work out how you will cope with this crisis
