If you have had a reaction to a crisis, it is important to take steps to help you cope.
Some of the things you could try include:
Get support from your family and friends
- Talk about your thoughts and feelings with family and friends
- Be with people who care about you and keep away from those who challenge or criticise you
- Talk with others who have shared the experience
- Spend time alone if you need to
- Get someone to stay with you for a few hours each day
- Get support from your faith community
Reduce work stress
- Let your teaching staff know if you need more time to get assignments done
- Talk to your manager if you need support or time off from work
- Don't make any big decisions or changes
Relax
- Keep a journal; write down your worries if you cannot sleep without thinking about them
- Do things which you know relax you and make you feel good
- Be patient, gentle and kind with yourself.
Take extra care of your physical self
- Avoid places and situations which are unsafe
- Eat regular meals, even if you don't feel like it
- Limit coffee, cigarettes and alcohol
- Try to keep to your regular schedule
- Get some exercise, but also get plenty of rest
- Keep taking your usual medicines
