Coping with a crisis

If you have had a reaction to a crisis, it is important to take steps to help you cope.
Some of the things you could try include:

Get support from your family and friends

  • Talk about your thoughts and feelings with family and friends
  • Be with people who care about you and keep away from those who challenge or criticise you
  • Talk with others who have shared the experience
  • Spend time alone if you need to
  • Get someone to stay with you for a few hours each day
  • Get support from your faith community

Reduce work stress

  • Let your teaching staff know if you need more time to get assignments done
  • Talk to your manager if you need support or time off from work
  • Don't make any big decisions or changes

Relax

  • Keep a journal; write down your worries if you cannot sleep without thinking about them
  • Do things which you know relax you and make you feel good
  • Be patient, gentle and kind with yourself.

Take extra care of your physical self

  • Avoid places and situations which are unsafe
  • Eat regular meals, even if you don't feel like it
  • Limit coffee, cigarettes and alcohol
  • Try to keep to your regular schedule
  • Get some exercise, but also get plenty of rest
  • Keep taking your usual medicines
