Ethical Coffee at the Club and Joe's

In accordance with the Monash University Club’s aim to be environmentally and socially responsible, and in support of the University’s sustainability initiatives, we are pleased to announce the following change.

As of July 2009, the coffee in the Club and building 3A is Santosa FAIRTRADE certified coffee from the Carlini Coffee Company, and the beans used at Joe’s are Carlini Rainforest Alliance. The FAIRTRADE organic beans are sourced from Columbia, Guatemala and Papua New Guinea. Our Carlini Rainforest Alliance blend includes the Brasil Ipanema Espresso variety as well as beans from Peru, Mexico and El Salvador.

Altogether we will be moving nearly 3000 kilos per year to support socially aware programs.

Who are these companies and what do they represent?

Fairtrade Coffee is a practical, everyday way to help eradicate poverty. Most of the world’s coffee is produced by small-scale farmers in developing countries. The additional price they receive for their Fairtrade coffee can mean the ability to eat nutritious meals, to send their children to school, or to access the health services they need.

The Fairtrade system also means more environmentally sustainable farming practices and improved community services. The Fairtrade premium enables communities to invest in a range of local projects such as:

• Local health care services
• Local schools
• Micro credit schemes that enable local farmers to diversify their income

Rainforest Alliance certification is a comprehensive process that promotes and guarantees improvements in agriculture and forestry. Its independent seal of approval ensures that goods and services were produced in compliance with strict guidelines protecting the environment, wildlife, workers and local communities. In addition they prepare tourism businesses to meet the standards of various global tourism certification programs through training and technical assistance.
