Abstract:
In March 1999, a new
Practical Driver Assessment (PDA) was introduced as the first stage
of Western Australia's Graduated Driver Training Licensing Program
(GDTLP). The intention of the new PDA and the underlying Driver
Competency Standard is to produce safer drivers and to better assess
the competence of drivers for holding a licence. This paper presents
the findings of a survey of the perceptions of Driver Licensing
Assessors and Professional Driving Instructors of the new PDA. All
Transport Driver Licensing Assessors and a random sample of registered
Class 1 Professional Driving Instructors were mailed a research
questionnaire addressing the value and effectiveness of the new
PDA and other aspects of the GDTLP. Completed questionnaires were
received from 33 Driver Licensing Assessors and 69 Driving Instructors.
Analysis is currently being undertaken of the Assessors' and Instructors'
satisfaction with the PDA as a driver assessment tool and of their
perception of the impact of the new PDA on the skills, knowledge,
attitudes and safety of learner-drivers. The results of the survey,
which is part of the evaluation of the GDTLP, will provide useful
information on the acceptance of and support for the PDA from Assessors
and Instructors.
