Abstract:
During 2000, the Australian
Capital Territory developed a the fourth of its consecutive initiatives
in a graduated licensing system designed to promote safer driving
in new its educational features as trans? Known as Road Ready Plus,
features facilitated group activities, following completion of a
range of individual activities, which then attract an award in terms
of return of demerit points and the capacity to drive without displaying
a Probationary plate. The program is targeted at young, novice drivers
under 26 years, who have had their license for a minimum of six
months.
The paper will outline
the program as developed by a team at the University of Canberra,
and explore its educational features as translated into the design
for reducing risk behaviours among the target groups. As with successful
programs in other arenas of risk-related social activity, the educational
focus was on building awareness, building a culture of discussion
and information sharing, and a peer culture that allows for differences
to be expressed in a safe manner. The paper thus offers both a description
of the new program and an analysis of its development principles
on a new initiative.
