Abstract:

This study examines patterns and long term trends in road crashes that occurred in Western Australia over the period 1980 - 2000. The objective of the study is to analyse the trends in conjunction with current crash patterns. The study covers a selection of patterns that include collision types, severity, speed and fatigue related crashes as well as some other road, environmental and human factors. Regions are compared and any significant regional differences reported where they occur.

The main purpose of the study is to make recommendations for future road safety strategic directions and action plans. The study is not meant to be an evaluation of past road safety initiatives although general comments will be made as to their affect on trends where appropriate.
