Abstract:
Research has shown the
casualty crash risk of motorcycle riders in countries such as Australia,
Canada, USA and the UK to be up to 17-20 times that of car occupants.
Riders aged less than 25 years are often over-represented in both
fatal and injury crashes.
It is of interest that,
following a period of marked decline, sales of new road motorcycles
have increased in Australia since 1995. (eg road registerable motorcycle
sales in 2000 were more than 80% higher than in 1995). This apparent
resurgence in on-road motorcycle numbers may have resulted in a
corresponding increase in crash risk/involvement for riders, particularly
older riders who may be taking up or returning to on-road motorcycling
as weekend and recreational riders.
This paper will examine
the relationship between Australian motorcycle crash data and motorcycle
sales patterns since 1990. Where possible, it will look for any
changes in crash risk or involvement by age of rider, day of week
and type/size of motorcycle. The results may be of interest to road
authorities, the motorcycle industry and rider organisations.
