2009 Monash Transition Retention and Progression Forum

Working together for student success

Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th December, 2009

An invitation from Professor Rob Willis

With the release of the Bradley Review of Australian Higher Education, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard MP, has called for major structural reform of the sector, declaring at a recent Universities Australia conference that “we must focus on students, their experiences and pathways, the knowledge they gain, the skills they will use, the public good they will deliver”, creating a new “student-centred, demand-driven” higher education system.

To achieve this, the Government has declared a new target - that by 2025, 40 % of all 25-34 year olds will have a qualification at bachelor level or above (compared to 32 % at present). Further, that by 2020, 20 % of higher education enrolments at undergraduate level should be of people from low socio-economic backgrounds (16 % at present). In addition the Government has also announced that all Australian universities will be funded on the basis of student demand from 2012.

To provide an opportunity for academic and professional staff to address these challenges that universities face, Monash University will host a two day conference entitled the “2009 Monash Transition Retention and Progression Forum” on 9th and 10th December 2009 at its Caulfield campus.

Submissions are encouraged from staff working with international students and under-represented groups in higher education – for example, indigenous students, students from regional locations, and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.

We have invited staff from Victorian universities and secondary schools to participate in the discussions, sharing ideas and proven strategies to address the Transition related issues, and we are delighted to announce that the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard, in her capacity as Minister for Education, has accepted our invitation to be the keynote speaker at this year’s Forum.

Please mark these dates in your diaries and forward the details to any colleagues or students who you think might be interested in attending, presenting a paper, participating on a panel discussion or preparing a poster presentation.

We look forward to seeing you at the event.
