Extending the HR Architecture:  Social Capital Archetypes and Organizational Learning

Scott A. Snell is Professor of Human Resource Studies and Director of Executive Education at Cornell University’s Center for Advanced Human Resource Studies (CAHRS). He received a BA in Psychology from Miami University, as well as MBA and Ph.D. degrees in Business Administration from Michigan State University. Scott’s work addresses the different ways companies compete through people. In particular, his research and teaching interests focus on how firms create value by identifying and managing different talent pools, and integrating that talent with core organizational processes and systems that drive performance. He has worked with companies such as American Express, Deloitte & Touche, GE, IBM, Merck, Royal Dutch Shell, and SK Group to address the alignment of human resources and strategic management.  Currently, he is a co-investigator of a large-scale study of companies in North America, Europe, and Asia that focuses on the next paradigm for HR leadership. He has over fifty publications in journals and edited texts and is the author of two books, Management: Leading and Collaborating in Competitive World, and Managing Human Resources.   Scott has served on the Executive Board of the Academy of Management’s HR Division as well as editorial boards for the Academy of Management Journal, International Journal of Learning and Intellectual Capital, Journal of Managerial Issues, Digest of Management Research, Human Resource Management, Human Resource Management Review, and Human Resource Planning.
