Theme

The global movements of people, resources and ideas have enormous implications for international economies, laws, identities, societies and politics.

Too often, the consequences of global movements are seen in divided isolation.

Monash University, responding to these changes, has already adopted a global strategy, and has created campuses and research linkages in Europe, Asia and Africa.

The University has now also established an Institute for the Study of Global Movements. Spread across five faculties, the Institute will undertake high quality research and – through its published output and otherwise – foster public discussion of these crucial issues.

Speakers

Matt Viney MP, the Parliamentary Secretary for Innovation and Industry for the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development will provide the welcoming address.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs the Honourable Alexander Downer MP will launch the Monash Institute for the Study of Global Movements.

Three outstanding experts have accepted Monash’s invitation to speak at the conference:

Professor Bob Rowthorn, Chair, Faculty of Economics and Politics, University of Cambridge. Professor Rowthorn is a leading scholar and challenging speaker on the impact of the movement of people.

Professor Peter Singer, currently at Princeton University. Professor Singer is probably Australia’s best known international thinker and writer on ethical issues.
