Drainage works on campus

A significant stormwater upgrade for the Peninsula campus and surrounding local area is being undertaken by Pipelines Alliance, which includes Melbourne Water. The works include tunnelling underneath the front left carpark adjacent to Bunnings (see map below), which will temporarily impact on 110 blue car parking spaces.

Carpark area to be closed during pipe works

Red indicates maximum works area. Green idicates underground tunnel alignment. Blue indicates temporary shaft for tunnel boring machine.

To make up for the loss of parking spaces on campus, Pipelines Alliance has provided an alternative carpark (pdf 142kb) in Deane Street for staff and students with blue permits.

Deane Street can only be accessed from Cranbourne Road, and the carpark is just across the railway line at the back of the campus. It is a two to three minute walk to campus from this temporary carpark. There are 122 spaces available for blue parking at this site during the works period.

Students and staff using this area are reminded that Deane Street is a residential area and as such we request that all users of the car park remember that their driving behaviour and general conduct can impact residents.

Please also note:

  • the speed zone in Deane Street is 50km p/h
  • to be particularly careful when turning into Burnley Street from Deane Street, and
  • only enter and exit the area via Deane Street and Cranbourne Road.

As well as solving stormwater problems on campus, which have led to flooding in the past, the campus will also benefit from the project by a series of rainwater tanks being installed along the McMahons Road fenceline which will filter and capture the stormwater for re-use in irrigation for the campus grounds.

The Pipelines Alliance works include:

  • closing off the car park by early September 2009
  • putting up temporary fencing and establishing a site office
  • establishing a launch shaft tunnelling from the shaft (December 2009 to February 2010)
  • Construction of a permanent manhole
  • Re-opening of the carpark by June 2010

The campus very much appreciates your patience during these works and if you expect your daily routines to be impacted, we recommend using the alternate carpark from the start of semester to make your own start and end to the day more predictable.

Any queries in the meantime should be directed to Shaun Tankard at Security and Parking.
