Fond Farewell Kay and Christina

Cafeteria icons Kay Kendall and Christina Kontos bid Peninsula farewell on the 31st of October 2007 after 18 years of service.

The pair spent their first five years at Monash as casual staff at the original Peninsula café in A Building, and became full-time when the cafeteria in U Building was established. Kay and Christina

Regular café visitors would agree that being greeted by a smile and a story from staff who know your name and coffee order, typifies the experience of being on a campus like Peninsula. Kay and Christina had it down to an art.

Christina says (of herself and Kay) “we started together, we’ll finish together” – and it’s hard to imagine it any other way.

Best wishes Kay and Christina, from everyone at Monash Peninsula.

Experience Peninsula

Around 100 visitors had a Peninsula ‘Experience’ on the 25th of September when the Prospective Students Office hosted a half day program to showcase the courses and the campus. Experience, Walking to Info SessionStudents in Years 10 to 12 and their parents attended a range of workshops about the disciplines taught at Peninsula. Information sessions with tips for making a smooth transition to university were also on offer.

This event followed a successful launch of the program in 2006, but was of particular interest to families this year who missed Peninsula Open Day due to their attendance at other campuses on the 5th of August.

Participants represented 37 schools from across Victoria (and one from Canberra!). The program was flexible in that people could attend for the whole day or just for the workshops they were interested in.

Feedback from parents and students has been overwhelmingly positive.

“Very informative, I felt relaxed and welcome to be accompanying my son. It gave him more information and confidence with making decisions.”

Wayne Sturrock“Gave an excellent insight into all aspects of University in detail. We have a much clearer idea of what to expect with transition.”

“Very impressed with the whole day. Many questions were answered - normally I don’t know what questions to ask so to have them covered was brilliant.”

“The day gave students and parents an insight into what to expect. Bring on Monash!”

Dr Wayne Sturrock from the Department of Health Science
explaining the inner workings of the heart to prospective students

Thankyou to all Peninsula staff who were involved with the day.

Special Projects Funding for Orientation

Three new Orientation projects at Peninsula campus have been awarded 2008 funding by the Orientation Management Committee. The Monash Postgraduate Association, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and Faculty of Education submitted successful applications for what look like innovative additions to our program for next year.

The activities will range from hands-on lab sessions and scavenger hunts to postgrad orientation sessions.

Thankyou to everyone who took the time to put together applications for our campus.

Peninsula Helps Year 12s Prepare for End of Year Exams

More than 700 students attended VCE revision lectures held on October 13 and 14 at Peninsula campus. Eighteen sessions covering 13 VCE discipline areas were available to students, the largest offering to date. Local schools that are part of the ‘Schools Access Monash’ program were offered free tickets for their students to attend.

Tanya O’Brien and Jenny Salmond did a magnificent job in preparing for the lecture series and ensuring everything ran beautifully over the weekend.

The lecture series is a Monash initiative designed to support students with their VCE and university entry aspirations.

Connections and Collaborations: Monash Peninsula
Research Forum

On Monday 22nd of October the Monash Peninsula hosted "Campus-Community Connections and Collaborations: An Integratated Perspective on Health and Wellbeing" at Morning Star Estate. Members of the University research community (both staff and students) shared their research with members of the local community representing a range of health, wellbeing and education focused organisations. Guests were encouraged to collaborate to develop strategic connections for future research initiatives.

The day was opened by Pro Vice-Chancellor (Campus Coordination) Professor Phil Steele and featured Todd Harper (CEO of VicHealth) as keynote speaker.

Participants had the opportunity to share their research questions, problems and developments in ‘Speed Dating’ and ‘Bright Sparks’ sessions – the format providing room for both insightful discussion and a few giggles as guests raced the clock to share their work.

Todd Harper and Marilyn FleerAnother event highlight was the research poster competition, judged by Todd Harper. The winner was Education student Hilary Monk, for her entry entitled: ‘The intergenerational transmission and transformation of family values and beliefs during child rearing.’ Congratulations to Hilary and all the poster entrants.

It is hoped that the forum will lead to further collaboration with local community partners, while reinvigorating the Peninsula research community. Well done to everyone involved.

Todd Harper with Professor Marilyn Fleer,
Research Coordinator Peninsula
