Vale Glenn Russell

Glenn Russell

-by Geoff Romeo

Dr Glenn Russell, from the Faculty of Education at Peninsula, passed away peacefully on 31 August, 2009.

Glenn had been bravely battling illness for quite a number of years but he was always positive, and maintained his sense of humour and commitment to his students and his scholarship.

Glenn taught in country and suburban schools in Victoria for nearly twenty years before becoming a foundation lecturer in Computer Education at Griffith University, where he developed undergraduate and graduate courses. He joined the Faculty of Education at Monash University at  the Peninsula Campus in 1999. He had an international reputation in virtual schooling, cyberspace, and educational uses of hypertext.

At the time of his passing he was working on ethical uses of information and communications technology in school education, educational futures in globalised environments, and responsibilities in online schools. He will be sadly missed. Glenn is survived by his wife, Pat.

Blog what's on your mind

A new Library blog has been created to keep Monash staff and students informed about Library resources and services for education and research.

The Library blog welcomes comments. Let us know your thoughts on any of the postings about branch libraries, electronic resources, news and events in the Library.

The Peninsula Library staff will be actively blogging about the latest in the branch. For example, we have recently posted Open Access Holds and Reserve and we are inviting comments about this new service.

Health Professionals and Health Sciences Education Symposium

The Centre for Medical and Health Sciences Education, in association with Peninsula campus, is running a Health Professional and Health Sciences Education (HPHSE) Research Symposium focussing on ‘Building the Culture of Educational Research in the Health Professions and Health Sciences'.

The Symposium will be held on Tuesday 29 September at the Peninsula campus in lecture Theatre A4.16.

Educational research and innovation provides an opportunity for educators to extend their practice based on latest theory and evidence, and for researchers to understand the critical issues that shape the future of the healthcare and health science's workforce.

Sharing advances can be difficult for isolated educators, clinicians and researchers. This symposium seeks
to both support and understand the culture of educational research.

The full day program includes: a key note speaker on developing educational research in the health professions/health sciences, a debate about the culture of HPHSE research; a researchers' showcase of current educational research and innovation within Monash University.

Whether you are an academic, clinical educator or educational researcher, this symposium will be of interest. It will provide insights, promote networks and share opportunities across the community of health professions and health
sciences education and research.

Registrations are required by 22 September to Pamela Collom.  The full program can be downloaded with registration form.

Cup cakes for a cause

Andrea McCall at cup cake day

You don't really need an excuse to eat cup cakes but if it is for a good cause, well maybe an extra one or two wouldn't do any harm.

Andrea McCall (pictured) from the Faculty of Business and Economics coordinated Cup Cake Day for the RSPCA at both the Berwick and Peninsula campuses recently raising over $130 for the animal welfare organisation.

Free movie tickets up for grabs

Stone Bros is a new aboriginal comedy from writer director Richard J. Frankland, starring Luke Carroll, Peter Phelps and Leon Burchill.

The plot sees city based Eddie setting off to reconnect with his blackfella roots by taking a sacred stone back to his hometown. But when wild-boy Charlie forces himself along for the ride, Eddie's spiritual journey takes a sharp turn off-track and becomes a rip-roaring, riotous road trip through outback Australia!

The Sydney Morning Herald called it "unquestionably hysterically funny"! Variety said it was "a fitfully funny ride"

Check out the trailer at www.stonebrosmovie.com.au

Staff and students are being offered free double passes to an exclusive preview screening of Stone Bros at Frankston ANC on Thursday 17 September at 6.45 pm.  To secure tickets email  with the words "MONASH- FRANKSTON-STONE BROS." in the subject line.
