Midwifery student takes national award

Final year Midwifery student Ms Karen Wesley was recently recognised for her academic and clinical achievements as part of the Australian Nursing Awards.

Karen was one of three nursing students to receive the sanofi-aventis Student Achievement Award for her outstanding academic and practical results over the three years of her degree.

Karen Wesley far left with other award recipients, Jade Larosa (University of Tasmania) and Megan McLaughlin (QUT), and sanofi-aventis' Rod Hopkins.

The citation given as part of Karen's award noted excellence in all aspects of the course since commencing. Feedback from hospital staff supervising Karen while she was undertaking student placements included praise for her aptitude in clinical skills, and her attitude to women under her care and the professional midwifery role in general.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery recognised Karen's potential and nominated her for the award.  The selection committee also recognised her as a "future leader in the midwifery profession, particularly with her aim of undertaking further studies with a focus on research that will be of future benefit to the midwifery profession".

Karen was flown to Brisbane to receive the award, which included $500 cash.

Peace mural launched at Peninsula

The 3.5 metre by 7.8 metre 'Children at Play' mural consists of eight panels that fit together to make the final art work.

A peace mural painted by Grade 5 and 6 children from St Joseph’s Primary School in Chelsea was publicly exhibited for the first time in the Faculty of Education at the Peninsula Campus last week.

Sixteen children, their proud parents, grandparents and teachers, together with many intrigued pre-service teachers and Education faculty staff attended the official opening of what is the second school contribution to this 10 year project that commenced in Japan on the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.

In 2005 St Joseph's teacher, Eloise Cole, was undertaking study in the Faculty of Education at the Peninsula campus and was introduced to the Kid’s Guernica International Peace Project  by lecturer David Zyngier. She took the idea back to her students who embarked on the process of planning and producing the mural as a way of participating in this international project and taking action to make a peaceful difference.

The 'Children at Play' Kid's Guernica Peace Mural was inspired when the St Joseph's  students learnt about Pablo Picasso's painting, ‘Guernica’ in first term of 2005. Faculty of Education Art lecturer Geraldine Burke introduced the concept of the children's mural to the students in relation to Picasso's original painting, which was painted in protest against the brutality of bombing in the town of Gernika during the Spanish civil war and to highlight the devastating effects of war and suffering on people.

The children then developed a detailed description of the how and why they would set about this mammoth task. Teacher Eloise Cole explained the premise for the idea: "The children learned that everyone can make a difference and a worthwhile contribution to improving our lives. The students were looking at a way of taking action and making a contribution to the peace process on an international level. "

According to Mr Zyngier, the project is an example of how the different levels of Education can work together to make a difference in children's lives. "When you see a project like this come to fruition you realise the perspective and value children can give to international issues like peace and that this is something that should be nurtured at all levels of education.

"This project not only helps our future generation focus on world peace but connects them with other children across the world who are showing initiative and making a difference to the world while giving our student teachers a practical way of inspiring young minds to think on a global level. "

VCE students revise for mid year exams at Peninsula

More than 300 Year 12 students attended the Peninsula campus on Saturday, 27 May to take part in the mid year VCE Revision lectures.

Lectures were presented in the discipline areas of Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology with many of the session sold out.

VCE Lecture Series Coordinator Ms Tanya O'Brien said that each year the lecture series has become more popular. "This is the third year the series has run at Peninsula and it is gaining substantial interest not only from local Frankston and Mornington Peninsula students but from students as far away as the Northern and Western suburbs of Melbourne," she explained.

The lecture series is a joint initiative of the Peninsula Education Precinct and was established to provide a cost effective way of providing a service to students in the region who are often isolated and unable to participate in similar activities held elsewhere.

Tanya believes that the increasing success of the series is due largely to the quality of the presenters and the low cost to participants. "All presenters are current discipline teachers and after each series we undertake an indepth analysis of each presenter. This, combined with the nominal cost of only $20 per lecture, gives students a valuable opportunity to make the most of their VCE experience."

An end of year VCE Revision Lecture Series will be held on the 14 and 15 October.

Perceptions of health and wellbeing in Frankston

The School of Primary Health Care, on behalf of Frankston City Council, is conducting a survey to gauge the local community’s views about a range of social, economic and environmental factors that can affect health and wellbeing within the Frankston area.

Council will use the information from the survey to develop a Health and Wellbeing Plan for the community. Staff and their family and friends who are residents of the Frankston municipality are encouraged to complete this survey and contribute to the research in this important area.

All people who fill in the survey by 16 June are eligible to go into a draw to win a $200 gift voucher from Bunnings.

Surveys and the collection box are located at Building B reception. Please also take copies and distribute to your family and friends who live in the Frankston area. For further information, contact Jackie Doyle on extn 44447.

Security system upgrade

The Peninsula Campus Security System is currently being upgraded with all buildings being fitted with after hours swipe card facilities.

Staff and students who presently have after hour’s access to buildings via MilKeys will be required to obtain a 'Proximity Card'. This card also doubles as a new staff ID card and has been on issue since 1 January, 2006. If you are unsure if you already have a proximity card, it can be identified by looking at the reverse where the words 'Proximity Card' appear in the left corner.

To use this new card simply wave it in front of the device that has replaced the MilKey insert mechanism.

Staff who require a new Proximity ID Card should attend the Student Services Desk, during business hours (Level 2, C Building) and hand in their old staff ID Card, which will be replaced with a new card. To activate the card, staff must attend the Security Office (Struan) to have the card installed on the new system.

The proximity card devices are currently being installed building-by-building and there will be some overlap where staff will need to carry the new card and the MilKey until the new system is completely installed. Security will be advising each building as the process is completed. If you are unsure about which system to use, contact the Security Office on extn 44318.

New applications for after-hours access will need to be made to Security through the staff member’s Head of Department or organisational unit.
