PENINSULA ONLINEIssue 8 The wheels on the wireless busStaff and students doing their bit for the environment by catching the intercampus shuttle bus service to Clayton will now be able to check their emails enroute thanks to the introduction of in-vehicle broadband internet connectivity. In an Australia first being implemented thanks to a new partnership between Monash and Vodafone, Vodafone has installed a Moovbox M100 box to each bus, which delivers internet services to passengers by creating a bridge between Vodafone 3G HSDPA network and an on-board wi-fi hotspot. According to Monash University's Deputy Vice Chancellor Adam Shoemaker, the decision to partner with Vodafone on the bus initiative was part of Monash University's Wireless Everywhere project which aims to bring wireless coverage to all Monash campuses within the next 18 months "Wireless Everywhere was set up to ensure students had seamless access to essential learning services. With the average transfer between campuses taking 30 to 40 minutes, this was a chance for us to give students the opportunity to use their commuting time more efficiently," he said Students can use not only laptops while travelling but any mobile device that can access wi-fi networks such as the iPhone. "The buses not only have educational advantages but environmental benefits as well. Given the rising cost of petrol, many students use the bus services to commute to class and we hope this encourages more students to make this choice," Professor Shoemaker added. Schools benefiting from student experienceLocal schools and and their students are benefiting from the expertise and educational opportunities being taught as part of the primary education curriculum at the Peninsula campus. Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary) students tested the skills they had learned during second semester at Frankston Primary School recently where they held a learning fair for the students from St Francis Xavier and Frankston Primary Schools. The Monash students had been working with the Frankston Primary School students throughout the semester as part of their 'Valuing Science, Innovation and Society' unit with the end result culminating in showcasing a range of hands on science, environmental, society and cultural related activities and resources. The Frankston Primary School and St Francis Xavier School students had the opportunity to undertake the activities the Education students had designed as part of their final assessment for the unit. Lecturer Helen Widdop Quinton said the unit, including the culminating learning fair, gives the students an important opportunity to actively engage with the school students. "As well as developing important pedagogical skills, the unit boosts students' confidence making them more class room ready while giving them the ability to assess the validity of their teaching," she explained. Graduating students have their day
The graduating classes from the Faculty of Education at the Peninsula campus had an opportunity to get together as a group recently as part of the Monash Graduate Conference 2008. The group had the opportunity to hear keynote addresses from renowned Melbourne-based Educational Consultant and author Kathy Walker, and Ross Dean, Project Developer & Manager from the Victorian Educational and Leadership Consortium. The students also had the opportunity to attend a range of relevant workshops on issues including working with special needs children, using interactive whiteboards, games in the classroom, Steiner, Montessori and Reggio Emilia education, and early childhood research. Local primary school Mahogany Rise, provided a BBQ lunch for the participants before the principal and graduate teacher panel ,which looked at 'Surviving past day one!' Students put finishing touches on educational artBooks and children's stories have come to life in the Faculty of Education's art studio. Students have been putting the finishing touches to characters from children's books using a range of different mediums.
Monash Peninsula helps VCE students with exam preparationMore than 1500 registrations from Frankston, the Mornington Peninsula and surrounds were received for the VCE revision lectures at the Peninsula campus last weekend. This is the fifth year the series has been coordinated by the Peninsula campus with attendance almost doubling this year compared to previous years. Lecture series coordinator Ms Tanya O'Brien said the series had continually attracted increasing numbers of VCE students since its inception, but this year's numbers showed that the series' reputation has developed even further. "The schools in the local area have always been extremely positive about the value of the series and encouraged their students to attend," Tanya explained. "The added fact that we have been responsive to the needs of the local schools and their students, and tailored the lectures to their needs has added to the series' local reputation." The 17 different lectures were chosen specifically for students in the region, and as such the English texts and maths modules were selected because they were the most taught by local schools in the surrounding areas. For instance a new, one hour Maths Methods CAS extension class was added to the program together with a lecture for the English text, The Kite Runner. In line with the change in the English curriculum this year, the "English Writing Task" lecture was replaced with the "Language Analysis and Writing in Context", which proved extremely popular. "This receptiveness to updating the program combined with the highly professional lecturers and the low cost of $20 per lecture, keeps the series extremely accessible and valuable to local students," Tanya said. New Diploma of Health Sciences launched at PeninsulaMonash College has commenced teaching the Diploma of Health Sciences from its new location in Building G at Peninsula, where they will join their colleagues from the Diploma of Business who have moved from Building A.
