Peninsula
staff lead the way in prehospital research
Staff from the Department of Community Emergency Health and Paramedic
Practice (DCEHPP) are setting the standard as leaders in
their fields both nationally and internationally
with several being recognised for papers presented at prestigious
conferences around the world.
In 2007, Bill Lord, coordinator of the department's
undergraduate programs, won the Best Presentation award at the US Prehospital
Care Research Forum,
for his paper 'Factors affecting paramedic administration of analgesics to
patients in pain in the prehospital setting'.
Based at the University of California, LA, the forum
feeds into Emergency Medical Services Today conference, the leading North
American conference in its field. Bill also won
the Best Paper Award at the recent multi-disciplinary Australian Pain
Society Conference.
International success started in 2005 when senior
lecturer, Mal Boyle, won the runner up prize in the Best Paper competition
in the leading UK Research Forum -- '999 Emergency Medical Services Research
Forum' in Wales. Then in 2006, research fellow, Erin Smith, won best paper
at the Australian Prehospital and Emergency Health Research Forum.
According to DCEHPP head Professor Frank Archer, these
three research forums are the leading events in the field of prehospital
care around the world.
Most recently, at the 15th World Congress
on Disaster and Emergency Medicine held this month in Amsterdam, Ingrid Bielajs from DCEHPP, and Vivienne Tippett from Queensland University, were
joint winners of the Best Paper competition for their respective papers on
the two arms of the NHMRC-funded research project on Australian EMS
perspectives of planning for the potential Avian Flu Pandemic. This Congress
received 650 abstracts from which 250 were chosen for oral presentation.
"Department staff are the current title holders of two
of the three international research forums as well as having their research
achievements recognised in a range of significant forums in this emerging
discipline," Professor Archer said "These outstanding achievements give the department, the campus and the university significant
recognition as research leaders in prehospital and emergency medical
services."
DCEHPP staff have also extended their influence into other national and
international forums and with awards.
Erin Smith has been appointed to the Central Management Committee of the
International Cochrane Collaboration, in addition to her work as
administrator of the Cochrane Prehospital and Emergency Health Field located
at DCEHPP.
Research
Fellow Amee Morgans was awarded the VC's Commendation for Excellence in a
Doctoral Thesis for her recently completed PhD, which investigated how
patients make decisions in pre-hospital health emergencies. Amee, who
graduate with her PhD at the end of last year, was the first candidate from
the department to do so.
Professor
Archer will also be involved in assessing the 2007 NH&MRC
project grant applications as part of the committee's Panel for Primary Health
Care.
