Postgraduate Centre opens at Peninsula

More than 140 staff and postgraduate centres attended the recent launch of the Peninsula campus's new Postgraduate Studies Centre.

The new centre will be located in the campus’s historic Struan House and will provide facilities and services for all postgraduate students located at the campus as well as students who may live in the area but are undertaking postgraduate studies at another Monash campus.

Monash Peninsula Academic Director, Professor Phillip Steele, said the development of the centre is part of the university’s policy to strengthen graduate and research opportunities at all campuses.

“The Peninsula campus has 740 graduate and postgraduate students undertaking doctorate, masters and graduate diploma courses,” Professor Steele explained. “This number is expected to increase over the next two years with the development of new teaching and research particularly in the health area.”

“Research is a crucial part of the university’s role and Monash is recognised internationally for its many research strengths,” Professor Steele said. “The Peninsula campus has developed extensive teaching and research links in the fields of early childhood and primary education as well as primary health care, sport and outdoor recreation and business on a local and national scale.

The centre provides postgraduate and honours students with a wide range of facilities and services including:

  • Computer and printing facilities
  • Desktop support
  • Wireless network
  • Seminar/meeting room
  • Student lounge
  • Kitchen facilities
  • Lockers

Students wishing to use the facility need to register. Further details including registration forms can be found online.

The Monash Postgraduate Association (MPA) has also a seminar series for the semester to be held in the seminar room of the centre.

New Caledonian students enjoy life at Monash

Twenty two students from the Ecoles de Gestion et de Commerce in New Caledonia are being hosted by the Faculty of Business and Economics at the Peninsula campus.

The group of third-year business students are visiting Melbourne for 10 weeks between January and March to learn more about studying and working in Australia.

Mr Max Coulthard, a lecturer in the Department of Management and one of the program coordinators, said the students appreciated the opportunity to learn about life in Australia.

“Four weeks of their visit was spent in work experience with external companies so they were also able to see what employment in Australia was like.

The group is now spending four weeks attending lectures and tutorials in the Business and Economics faculty at the campus.

“A lot of the material covered will be similar to what they were studying in New Caledonia, but classes such as those that cover Australian industrial relations will allow them to compare our system with their own national setting,” Mr Coulthard explained

The students will enjoy experiencing social life on campus, by participating in extra-curricular activities and getting involved in student projects.

“This is the third time Monash has hosted a group of students from the Ecoles de Gestion et de Commerce in New Caledonia, and we hope to continue to build relations with our Pacific neighbour,” he said.
