Orientation Opening Ceremony

The Peninsula campus will again welcome all new students to the campus on Wednesday, 22 February with an official opening ceremony and morning tea.

All staff are invited to participate in the Opening Ceremony and morning tea, which will be held in the George Jenkins Threatre, either by taking part in the academic procession or joining the new students for morning tea following the official opening.

Staff interested in participating in the procession should advise Julie Baxter by Tuesday, 14 February on extn 44015. Please note, you do not need to be an academic staff member to be involved in the procession - all staff are welcome to attend.

Staff who require academic dress should also advise of their highest qualification, where they received that qualification, their height and head size for caps. Unfortunately, we are not always able to source the correct academic attire, especially for interstate and international institutions in which case a council gown will be supplied. Staff who participated in last year's procession do not need to advise of their details (Unless they have changed) as this information is on record.

Staff who wish to participate but have their own academic attire should still register as seats are set up on stage to accommodated those in the procession.

Happy Birthday to Mozart

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart, Dr Greg Hurworth and Dr Peter de Vries from the Faculty of Education will mark the occasion with a small 'concert' of live music lasting about 30 minutes, followed by cake and champagne on Friday, 27 January.

This anniversary on Mozart's birth is being widely celebrated in Australia with weeks of concerts, as well as in Europe, since he was Austrian, and around the world. Anyone wanting details can contact Greg Hurworth on extn 44277 or Carolyn Nye at the front desk of the Faculty of Education.

Changes to Parking permit system

Some changes to the parking permit system come into effect this year that may be important to staff.

Red staff permits now attract some cross campus privileges, reflecting the observed need for staff to conduct business at more than one campus. Peninsula Red Permit holders may park in any red area at Peninsula and any blue area at all other campuses (excluding Parkville) subject to space availability.

Departmental Yellow permits remain available for purchase by departments from Clayton. Refer to the Facilities and Services website for details. These permits are for use at campuses other than Peninsula when staff are on departmental business.

Temporary blue permits are no longer available. The casual (ticket machine) area in the main car park (Northern end of campus) has a greater area allocated to compensate for this change.

Temporary Staff Red permits continue to be available for this year (sold on a pro-rata basis). These permits DO NOT attract any cross-campus privileges and will not be recognised on other campuses.

Staff Red parking permits

Just a reminder that applications for Staff (Red) parking permits for 2006 close on Monday, 30 January 2006. The fee for these permits is $135 ($122.70 plus 10 per cent GST) for staff who opt to pay by cheque, money order or credit card. The GST does not apply in the fee is Salary Packaged.

Lecture theatre upgrades and training

The Teaching Facilities and Support Unit has been upgrading educational technology equipment in Centrally Programmed Spaces over the past two months. This includes all lecture theatres except A4.41 and many tutorial rooms. Any faculties that would like new and existing staff to be trained on the new equipment, should book a time with Roo du’Jardin on extn 44218.

Security snippets

Congratulations to Service Officer Michael Mirra and Security Officers Gordon Dowds, Barry Cavanagh and Alan Taylor on passing their level three Security License examinations. Monash staff were picked out by the course organisers as being well ahead of the other candidates in their knowledge and ability. All our staff scored between 95 and 100 per cent on the examinations. Well done!
