MUCAPS OPENING

The Monash University Centre for Ambulance and Paramedic Studies (MUCAPS) at the Peninsula campus was officially launched last week.

The purpose-built Centre was officially opened by Mr Matt Viney, Parliamentary Secretary for Human Services and Member for Frankston East.

Over 250 representatives from the Ambulance industry and the University attended the opening.  They then enjoyed a tour of the new MUCAPS building concluding with an informal lunch at the campus centre catered by MONSU.

Also at the launch were Vice-Chancellor Professor David Robinson, Dean of Medicine Professor Nick Saunders, Peninsula campus director Mr John White, campus manager Barry Bilham and parliamentary representatives Ms Andrea McCall (Frankston) and the Hon. Cameron Boardman (Chelsea).

The Director of the Centre, A/Prof. Frank Archer said support from all sections of the university had been overwhelming and instrumental to the Centre achieving its initial objectives. In particular, in the early days of MUCAPS, the staff and students were hosted in the School of Nursing, School of Network Computing and the Union building on the Peninsula campus.  “Everyone on the Peninsula campus had been most welcoming and provided tangible support over the past 12 months.  The MUCAPS staff are most grateful for this support”, he said.

MISSING - JAPANESE/ENGLISH DICTIONARY

Has anyone sighted a Japanese/English dictionary?

It was left by a visiting Japanese student (here for four weeks studying English and Nursing), from Aomori University, in a classroom in the School of Nursing. Pam Austin, English Language Centre, advises that the dictionary was to have been sent from the School of Nursing to Administration then onto the English Language Centre. However, it has gone missing in transit.

If you have seen this dictionary or know anything of its whereabouts please contact Pam as soon as possible on x44222.

REMINDER - WEB-BASED LIBRARY SURVEY

Reminder from the Library - opportunity to provide feedback on library services.

A web-based survey, designed to give staff and students an opportunity to state their views on how well they think Monash University Library performs, is being conducted from 4 to 17 September.

The information obtained from this survey will help to improve the library. Monash staff and students are encouraged to complete this short survey which is linked from various library web pages, including the Voyager catalogue, and is also available at the following address:
http://www.rodski.com.au/surveys/monash/index.cfm

Print copies of the survey are available from Information Desks at each library.

LAUNCH OF HIGH DEPENDENCY LAB - NURSING

On September 7th 2000, Monash University School of Nursing Peninsula Campus opened its new High Dependency laboratory.

This state of the art room was opened with the assistance of third year nursing students who showed representatives from the Nursing Industry what could be done with the equipment. The room has been designed as  a multi-function room for the new High Dependency Course (to commence in 2001), for Undergraduate students,  Emergency course students and for local industry groups.

In opening the unit, Associate Professor Tony Barnett, spoke of this being an exciting time at the school with the development of new postgraduate courses and the continued revision of the undergraduate courses. The latest of these courses, the Graduate Certificate of Nursing (High Dependency), was introduced to the audience who said they would encourage their employees to sign up.

The third year nursing students then ran through a scenario of a  55 year old patient "Bernard" whose condition deteriorated suddenly. The students performed many tasks and roles that they will be exposed to in their nursing careers. The students discussed their perceived value of  such a unit with the guests (who included representatives from Metropolitan Hospitals) - "It allows us to practise without causing any harm to real people." "We can attempt to problem solve and apply our theoretical knowledge in a practical environment." "Being put into this more controlled environment helps us to view the real world stresses we may face next year."

The room consists of the latest resuscitation mannequin with computerized functions such as recording of student performance for immediate feedback, and ECG interpretation practice programs. The software allows scenarios of emergency situations to be programmed testing the learners' reactions in an environment which is almost real and yet causes no harm to a live patient.

Advanced resuscitation equipment such as defibrillator, airway management, monitoring capabilities and IV equipment are some of the items available for practice. Laboratory technician Dalini Soni and Lecturer Bernard Hornblower have set up the room and would like to thank Peninsula Health for their donation of equipment.

For information about undergraduate Nursing courses, interested parties should contact at Peninsula Ms Kim Scanlon, tel: 9904 4260 or at Gippsland Ms Natalie Rennie on 9902 6681.  For postgraduate studies, contact Peninsula, Ms Jenny Lai on 9904 4156 or Gippsland, Ms Tara Harle, tel 9902 6441.
