Farewell to Diana Macmillan

After 12 years of service to the School of Nursing, under its many guises, Diana Macmillan retired last week.

Diana started at Chisholm Institute in the School of Social and Behavioural Studies (SOSABS) in July 1988 and moved to Nursing in December that year.

“Following the merger of Chisholm and Monash, the Caroline Chisholm School of Nursing came under the Faculty of Professional Studies along with a range of other areas that didn’t quite fit specifically under other established areas,” she explained.

“In 1992, when Gippsland campus joined Monash, the School became a subfaculty under the Faculty of Medicine and we have since become a School under the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.”

Through all the changes and at times turmoil, Diana said the campus had grown in beauty. “The new architecture such as the library and MUCAPS, and the colours in A building together with the gardens really add to the feel of the campus.”

She said the campus hit interesting times when things really began to change with developments such as the demolition of the hostel where the library is now located.

“When the campuses starting removing the old and bringing in the new it was a shock for a lot of people, but the campus has really moved forward providing a friendly community atmosphere thanks to the many changes that have been made.”

In 1992, Diana was awarded a RL Martin scholarship that saw her visit Canada to explore articulation from division 2 (SEN) to division 1 nursing.  “It was a great opportunity and I have since seen more developments in this area in terms of working relationships between the two areas.”

What she will miss? Well Diana says she will most miss the companionship of the people in the school and at the campus as well as the extensive resources available through the university.

She will also miss Susan Lawless who has been at the School of Nursing for as long as Diana has. “Susan was one of six intellectually disabled students from Woorinyan who came to the campus for a six month trial in 1989,” she explained. “Susan stayed and works at the school every Tuesday. She has developed such confidence here and I am very proud of her and the way the campus has adopted her and helped her progress.”

Last year Diana joined the Peninsula Health Board. “If I had not worked in the School of Nursing and gained a certain amount of knowledge about health care, I never would have applied to join such a board,” she said. “But I’ve learnt that my opinions and views are as valid as anyone else’s.”

Diana plans to develop her community relationships more but is certain that there will be many returns to Monash Peninsula campus.

THANK-YOU
Diana would like to thank all her friends and colleagues who came to the wonderful farewell function at the Tavern on Thursday afternoon.

Use of visitor's parking permits

Peninsula Campus Visitor’s Parking Permits are available from Campus Reception in C Building, for use in the following situations:
  • By outside visitors to the campus for short-term visits (up to one full day)
  •  By university staff from other campuses who have been unable to secure an intercampus parking permit for their short-term visit to Peninsula (up to one full day).  Please note that staff from other campuses will normally be expected to obtain an intercampus permit from their faculty or department prior to coming to Peninsula, and Peninsula Visitor’s Parking Permits will not be issued to staff visiting from other campuses who continually attend the campus without an intercampus permit.
Visitor’s Parking Permits are not available to staff from other campuses or visitors who will be parking at the campus for any period longer than one day. In such cases, longer term parking permits should be obtained from the relevant faculty or department.

Works Branch news

A Building Lecture Theatre
The new lecture theatre in Level 4 of A Building (room A4.16) is now operational. This theatre is fully equipped with all the latest technology and I am sure the campus users will be impressed with this new facility.

Users should be aware that all lectures that were scheduled in the A4.03 will now be shifted to the new theatre. The Works Branch will now be demolishing A4.03 and replacing it with a new look theatre similar to the A4.16.

All going well, this project will be completed prior to the start of second semester. The Works Branch then intends to transfer the users of A2.04 to level 4 to enable the space on level 2 of A Building to be refurbished for Education and Arts. All of this is to be taking place during the 2001.

Faculty of Education
The consolidation of Education into A Building has
taken another step with the relocation of the Maths and Science areas to Level 4, and Computing and General Teaching moving to Level 3. These areas will now know what airconditing is like!

Faculty of Arts
The Arts Faculty is still located on Level 4 of A Building but now have a reception counter which should make life easier for students. Unfortunately the space could not be airconditioned until the next stage of refurbishment is completed prior to the commencement of second semester 2001.

Landscape works
The new pedestrian area between the Ambulance and Nursing buildings is now completed and should provide  better access for staff and students using these buildings as well as an area for taking that needed break.

School of Network Computing
Alterations to G Building, Level 4 are almost complete with the changes providing an improved administrative area.

Use of rooms at Peninsula

Faculties/schools/departments wanting to use their own space after hours and during semester breaks, must first advise Works Branch for ventilation, heating & lighting purposes as well as Security in writing.

Should usage of space be required on a weekend, a courtesy copy should also be sent to the Campus Manager, Peninsula, for information.  There is no requirement to go through Campus Administration.
