A festive feast

About 110 staff enjoyed the festive season last week at a combined Christmas lunch and final Campus Director's Drinks for 2000.

Campus director John White reported on a number on initiatives that had taken place at the campus during the year and a number that are planned for 2001.

Social Club - John thanked the social club committee, Paul, Michael, Joanne, Warren, Julie, Wayne and Gail, for their great work in organising the Christmas function and the other events that have been held over the year. The Social Club now has over 100 members – a mighty effort and that reflects excellent campus community and spirit.

Peninsula Accommodation – still planning to have the new student accommodation ready for occupancy at the start of semester two next year. Plans are for four blocks each with 10 bedrooms to be built between the student union building and the existing accommodation.

Hockey pitch – things are still looking positive, discussions are continuing and figures are being worked out. Council is supportive.

Refurbishment/landscaping/signage – Building A work is progressing well and the space for Education and the new 128 seat lecture theatre will be ready for the start of semester one. Skylights are to be installed in G Building before Christmas. Landscaping work near MUCAPS/Nursing will be completed shortly. Upgrading of directional and building identification signage is almost completed.  McMahons Rd corner sign has been repaired and has the new logo.

Relay for Life – MONSU and Monash coordinated a very successful fundraising event for the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria on 18 and 19 November at Ballam Park, which raised over $58,000. Many staff were involved. It was terrific to see the number of Monash/MONSU teams taking part. The campus will be coordinating the event again in 2001 and Ballam Park has been booked for the weekend of 17 & 18 November. It would be great to see even more Monash team representation next year!

Monash Lectures Online – all equipment is up and running in F1.01 and is now ready for any recording tasks. The new theatre, A4.16, will also be equipped to record lectures online.

Orientation Welcome Ceremony/Morning Tea – will be held on Wednesday, 21 February at 11 am with a morning tea prior to this at 10.15 am. It would be great if as many staff as possible attended to make the academic procession bigger. If you would like to take part in the procession, please contact Julie Ryan if you have not already done so.

Women’s Networking and Support Group – this group has just had its first meeting and has done some 2001 planning of suggested speakers/activities. The group is keen to have general and academic staff, and staff and students from MONSU. If you’d like to join this group, please contact Helen Dunne.

Reconciliation Flag – staff may have noticed that the Reconciliation Flag flies every Tuesday at the campus. The flag was designed by Russell Kennedy from our Faculty of Art and Design.

New staff - Following the departure of Phil Steele, Professor Bala Srinivason (Srini) has been appointed as the new head of Network Computing. Also extend a warm welcome to new campus manager Ms Jill McLachlan and new coordinator of Arts at the campus Dr Seamus O'Hanlon.

2001 Lunchtime Concerts – plans to have six concerts per semester next year.

Farewell to overseas students

Monash International hosted a farewell lunch and presentation day for international students graduating from Peninsula campus last week.

The event was a great success for students, staff and even some
parents who were able to attend.
