$54K raised for cancer researchThirty two teams raised $54,000 for cancer research at the inaugural Relay for Life event held on the weekend. While many of the teams had been on the fundraising trail for a couple of months, the event at Ballam Park Athletics Track gave participants the opportunity to get together and enjoy each other's company and support over the 24 hours. Officially opened by event patron Ms Debbie Flintoff-King and Frankston Mayor Cr Mark Conroy, the first lap of the event was walked by about 60 cancer survivors and carers. Participants enjoyed a range of entertainment over the course of the 24 hours with a highlight for many being the candlelight ceremony. The highest team fundraiser was awarded to the Cornish Pasties from St Leonard's College who raised $4875.90 and the highest individual fundraiser was awarded to Joanne Munger and Colin Armitt both from the Hospice Heroes who raised $1000 each. The MONSU/Monash organising committee would like to thank the volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the event, the many performers and entertainment providers, the numerous sponsors, the masseurs who helped weary bodies continue for 24 hours and most all the TEAMS - without them Frankston Relay for Life would never have happened.
