$66.5k raised for Anti-Cancer Council

Twenty seven teams raised more than $66,500 for the Anti-Cancer Council Victoria at this year's Relay for Life held at Ballam Park on 17 & 18 November.

Due to severe weather that saw the event called off at 5.30 am on Sunday 18 November, the official closing ceremony was held last week at the Seahorse Tavern.

Many team members, who had taken a battering during the weekend, returned for the closing ceremony and to hear the announcements of money raised and laps completed.

The highest team fundraiser was the Walk with Will team which raised $10,391.70. The team consisted of an extended family group and the team name had an double meaning - young two year old William is a cancer survivor of 16 months. Diagnosed with Bilateral Retinoblastoma (cancer of both eyes) when he was four months old, Will's Mum and Dad, Chris and Colin Armitt, joined a team for last year's event. This year they got their own team together. Colin was also awarded the highest individual fundraising trophy raising $3014.85.

Other significant team totals came from the Cornish Pasties from St Leonard's College, which raised $8220.25 and the Peninsula Ladies Hash House Harrietts raising $7342.60.

Monash University/MONSU teams raised more than $20,500 for this year's event.

Relay for Life Chairmanager Ravi Chand, said the response from teams has been overwhelming.

"This year we had fewer teams than last year and were able to raise more money," he said. "The teams' dedication and support of this event, especially in such adverse weather conditions, shows amazing commitment to this worthy cause."

Frankston Relay for Life patron Ms Debbie Flintoff-King read the Relay for Life Oath  . . .
which was followed by the first lap led by cancer survivors in red sashes and carers in green.
When Mother Nature took control flattening tent sites and sending marquees flying down the straight . . .
the pavilion became a makeshift tent for the wet, cold and weary.
The clean up began aided by seagulls that arrived at Ballam Park in force.

Parking permits for 2002

STAFF (RED) PARKING PERMITS

Application forms for 2002 Staff Parking Permits are being forwarded to all campus-based staff last week.

If any staff member has not received the form, please contact Ms Lay Lin Oh on extn 44339 for a copy.

The GST does not apply if the fee is Salary Packaged.

INTER-CAMPUS PARKING PERMITS

Faculties and departments are reminded that the 2001 Inter-campus permit expires on 31 December 2001 and that a 2002 permit will be required to park in the yellow signed Inter-campus parking areas at Clayton and
Caulfield from that date.

Application forms for the 2002 Yellow Parking Permits are available from Security and Traffic Office at Clayton. The cost of the permit for 2002 is $200.

Orientation 2002

Planning for Orientation 2002 is already well underway with Bob Greaves from Education undertaking the role of academic coordinator at the campus.

The official opening ceremony will be held on Wednesday 27 February at 11 am with a morning tea held prior to the ceremony.

All staff are invited to attend the morning tea and take part in the academic procession as part of the Opening Ceremony. Staff interested in taking part in the procession should advise Julie Ryan of their highest qualification and institution where they received that qualification, their height and head size in centimetres (for caps).

FACULTY CHALLENGE

A key feature of this year's Orientation is the annual Faculty Challenge, which will be held on Wednesday 6 March 2002. Each faculty/area is encouraged to register a team consisting of staff and students for the challenge. The challenge test participants' athletic skills in a range of events including the egg toss and jelly race. Event organiser Chad Brooks will be contacting all faculty and areas about the challenge.

Last year's champions, the School of Network Computing, have already registered their team and are undertaking a strict training routine. But the competition should be fierce in 2002 for the overall title of Faculty Challenge Champs.
