Changes to Arts at PeninsulaFaculty of Arts activity at Peninsula is currently undergoing some changes. While the tagged Bachelor of Arts (International Communication) degree will be discontinued next year, the faculty will continue to contribute to a range of other disciplines at the campus. Peninsula Arts coordinator Dr Seamus OHanlon, says the faculty is committed to the campus and is "here to stay". "Arts already has strong links with Business and Economics, Education and Network Computing through double-degree offerings at the campus," he said. "These links will continue, with Arts committed to contributing to the already established and popular double degrees." Dr OHanlon expects that with the new focus on double degrees, Arts has the potential to increase its offerings at Peninsula. "In the future, this will provide opportunities for double-degree students to undertake more Arts subjects at Peninsula, rather than having to attend another campuses," he said. For further information, contact Dr O'Hanlon on extn 44386 or email It's a bugs life
Grades three and four students from Carrum Downs Primary School got up close and personal with bugs recently when Faculty of Education lecturer Dr Karen Malone visited the school with her 'Creepy Crawlies' show. The students were able to explore different types of bugs including spiders, butterflies, beetles and crickets using a digital microscope. The students so enjoyed their experience, many indicated their desire to become scientists or attend Monash in the future. To further enhance Science in primary schools, Dr Malone is also working with teachers to establish a primary science network. Thirty teachers from 15 schools located in the local area meet in the new science lab on campus once a month. During the sessions, a range of hands-on activities are held giving the teachers an opportunity to share ideas and resources. Dr Malone has also started a facility for teachers to borrow resources from the Monash Science Education laboratory to try in their own classrooms. Another initiative of the group is to establish links between current education students and teachers to support practicum placements, which allows students to further explore and work with teachers who are interested in trying new ideas in the classroom.
