Illness and Healing - the life and work of Robert PopeThe short life of talented contemporary Canadian painter Robert Pope was presented at the Peninsula campus last week by Robert's father Mr William Pope. The Robert Pope lecture featured the work of the artist who died of Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 36, in 1992. Robert left a living legacy in the form of 30 paintings depicting his illness experiences – from crisis of diagnosis through the rigours of treatment to a sense of connection with people, nature and the medical system that both assisted and hindered his journey from life to death. Through his paintings on the theme of Illness and Healing, Robert Pope has brought new understanding to the cancer experience and palliative care from a patient’s perspective. Mr William Pope has presented the exhibition around the world in over 60 major cities as part of the Robert Pope Foundation, which was established to help share Robert's amazing talent. The Melbourne leg of the Australian visit was supported by Professor Margaret O'Connor, from the School of Nursing as well as St Vincent's Health and Palliative Care Victoria.
