Careers in Education
Monash Student Employment and Careers Service at the Peninsula
campus is holding a 'Careers in Education' fair today Monday 19 August
from 12 noon to 3 pm in the foyer of Faculty of Education.
Participants can meet prospective employers, discover future career opportunities
and explore a range of the variety of jobs available in Education.
Participants in the fair included:
An image of self
Self-portraits by 13 young people from the Western English Language
School (WELS) in Braybrook are currently being exhibited in the gallery
area on the second floor of the Faculty of Education.
The students, aged between 12 and 18 years, are recent arrivals in
Australia and come from a range of ethnic backgrounds including Bosnia,
China, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
Art educator Jean Rasmussen led the exhibition titled ‘An Image of
Self’, in which students firstly observed their images in a mirror and
recorded their appearance on paper with a black marker.
As well as the self-portrait the students also provided hand written
autobiographical information on a copy of their portraits.
Arts/ESL teacher at the school Margaret Christianson said the project
provided an opportunity for the students to test their creative skills as
well as their English language communication skills.
"The project was based on self identity – how these young people
actually view themselves visually and personally."
The WELS students will visit the Peninsula campus this Thursday 22
August to view the portraits as part of the exhibition. They will also
spend time with third and fourth year Education students who will
undertake the self-portrait project in class.
The self-portraits will also be exhibited at the Footscray Community Arts
Centre as part of Austcare’s Refugee Week between 7 and 13 October.
In memory of Chystal Chee
The
Faculty of Arts
will award a posthumous degree to Chrystal Chee at an upcoming Malaysian graduation ceremony.
Chrystal
began her Monash studies as a student at the Malaysia campus, transferring
to the Peninsula campus to undertake an Arts degree. Unfortunately,
Chrystal was not to realise her dream of completing her degree in
Australia. She was taken from our community by a car accident on 12
August last year.
A
memorial plaque dedicated to Chrystal is located in the garden
near the MONSU BBQs.
