Careers in nursing expoNursing students at the Peninsula campus were given a valuable opportunity to talk with health professionals about graduate year programs as part of the 'Careers in Nursing' expo held recently. The event was coordinated by Mary Gordon, Careers Counsellor, Monash University Careers and Employment with cooperation from Joan Yalden, Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing. The event was similar to a Careers Fair, where representatives from hospitals and other health organisations talked with nursing students about graduate employment opportunities.
The participants included St Vincent’s Hospital, Southern Health, St Vincent’s and Mercy Private Hospital, Benchmark Health, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Peninsula Health, Eastern Health, Australian Nursing Federation and the Alfred Hospital. These professional health representatives provided some excellent information and advice for the final year nursing students with the aim of helping in their decision making process about where to apply to for graduate placements in July. Feedback from both students and expo participants agreed it was an excellent event and should be held again next year. Patient decision making in prehospital health emergenciesCentre for Ambulance and Paramedic Studies PhD student Amee Morgans is seeking volunteers to participate in a discussion group about patient decision making in prehospital health emergencies. According to Amee, knowing when you are sick enough to call an ambulance or go to the hospital emergency department is sometimes a difficult task. Hence, the research will explore how people make these decisions in emergency health situations. "We are inviting people over 18, who have recently experienced a health emergency, such as attended an emergency department or called an ambulance, to attend a discussion group," Amee explained "The discussion group will take one hour of your time and will be held at the Clayton campus on 16 June 2004. Family and friends are also welcome." There are two groups of participants required:
If the discussion group is not convenient then an individual interview can be arranged at your convenience. Anyone interested in attending or finding out more should contact Amee Morgans on extn 44247. Changes to after hours lecture theatre bookingsAs of Monday 31 May 2004 all after hours non-teaching access to Peninsula campus lecture theatres must be booked via the ITS service desk, which is located on level two of A building. When requesting after hours access please state the required theatre, the beginning and end time you wish to have access and any equipment requirements. If assistance is required with the teaching equipment, please contact Aaron Lee, Teaching Facilities Support Unit, during office hours on extn 44218, to arrange a mutually convenient time for instruction in the use of the equipment. Getting green on campusGreen tip #4 for reducing paperIn 2001 less than 1 per cent of paper purchased by Monash offices was recycled content paper. In 2002 this amount increased to 20 per cent.At the end of 2003, this amount had again doubled to 42 per cent of all paper purchased. This fantastic result could not have been possible without the work of Monash staff in pushing for the use of recycled content paper in their departments. Once again Monash departments are challenged to achieve an even better result by the end of 2004 with a target of 60 per cent of all paper purchased being environmentally friendly! Encouraging your departmental purchasing officer to order recycled content paper has been made easier by recent price changes negotiated by Procurement Services with Corporate Express. Exp 50R, the recommended recycled content paper, has been reduced in price, while Reflex (unsustainable virgin white paper from native forests) has increased in price. Prices for environmentally friendly paper available through Corporate Express and recommended by the Green Office Program are:
AVOID: Reflex, Exp 800, Exp 2000. These papers have no recycled content and are made by harvesting dwindling native forests of Australia and developing countries Peninsula notesArts week on campusDon't forget to visit the exhibition of landscape paintings by Patricia Morton in the George Jenkins Theatre Foyer next week, Monday 7 to Wednesday 9 June from 1 pm to 2 pm.
