Business and Economics awards ceremony

The Faculty of  Business and Economics hosted its annual awards evening on campus recently.

Guests at the awards presentation

The awards evening recognises excellence in student achievement by business students. Some 90 guests saw awardees collect $4,500 in prizes donated by local industry sponsors. The major sponsor for the formal dinner was BlueScope Steel.

The keynote speaker was Monash University Chancellor Mr Jerry Ellis. As well as his key role at the university, Jerry is a former chairman of BHP and director of the ANZ Bank. He spoke candidly about the need for transparent Corporate Governance and drew attention to the recent troubles between the university and the student union over the university's decision to increase its HECS fees.

It was also an opportunity to congratulate two staff members who gained PhDs during the year – Margaret Matanda and Susan Freeman.

Changes to after hours lecture theatre bookings

As of Monday 31 May 2004 all after hours non-teaching access to Peninsula campus lecture theatres must be booked via the ITS service desk, which is located on level two of A building.

When requesting after hours access please state the required theatre, the beginning and end time you wish to have access and any equipment requirements.

If assistance is required with the teaching equipment, please contact Aaron Lee, Teaching Facilities Support Unit, during office hours on extn 44218, to arrange a mutually convenient time for instruction in the use of the equipment.

Book club on campus

The bookshop is keen to gauge interest in starting a book club on campus.

The bookshop would be happy to organise dates, times, venue and the purchase of books. They would also extend a 15 per cent discount on all the books that would be purchased for the club.

Any staff  interested should email Melissa Gibbs in the Bookshp to register their willingness to participate.

Getting green on campus

Green tip #2 for reducing paper

By reusing paper that has only been used once on one side, not only do we significantly reduce the amount of paper we use (and purchase) but also the amount of paper we discard.

This translates to substantial savings for each Monash department, reduces our demand for woodchips from dwindling native forests and saves scarce landfill space.

The following are some ideas on how to reuse once used paper:

  • Use the lid of a copy paper box as a tray to collect once used paper in your office. Bright and funky stickers for these trays are available from the Environmental projects officer Mark Boulet
  • This paper is useful for scribbling notes or printing out drafts. When printing or photocopying drafts and other non-formal documents place once used paper in the manual feed tray.
  • Purchase once used paper notebooks for your area. Handy A5 notebooks are available from Corporate Express for 70 cents each (order code 9502 7088).

It's easy to be green with only a small amount of effort, which will eventually become habit.
