Local researcher wins global award

Education lecturer Dr Karen Malone has been recognised as part of the Growing Up In Cities international consortium, which has won this years Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) award.

Karen is the Asia-Pacific regional director of UNESCO’s Growing Up In Cities project and has conducted the Australian component of the research in the Melbourne suburb of Braybrook.

Growing Up In Cities research was first conducted in 1972 in Melbourne, Warsaw, Salta (Argentina) and Mexico City. The project was revisited in 1994 in Buenos Aires, Salta, Braybrook, Northampton (England), Bangalore (India), Warsaw (Poland), Johannesburg and Oaklands (California).

The research, which explores the needs of youth in an increasingly urbanised world, is a collaborative, global effort aimed at understanding and responding to issues affecting urban children and youth.

A book called Growing Up in an Urbanised World, consisting of the outcomes of the six years of cross-disciplinary, collaborative research work from all eight cities, has been published and is available from the library and bookshop.

The project was chosen from a pool of over 100 research projects submitted from around the globe.

Dr Malone said that the GUIC project shows how researchers can undertake significant, global work with local implications from a small campus on the outskirts of Melbourne.

Mind, Body, Spirit classes at the Fitness Centre

Finish your day in a relaxed frame of mind by undertaking Rosemary Bennett's unique Mind Body Spirit class at the Fitness Centre.

This class is a combination of gentle rhythmical movements, stretching, breathing techniques, postural alignment and relaxation.

The popular forms of Yoga, Pilates and meditation are incorporated along with an opportunity to use the 'fit balls'.

Rosemary is a registered fitness leader with Fit ball qualifications and lectures in Fitness Leadership in Faculty of Education.

Based on Rosemary's background in the best of both eastern and western exercise traditions, this class provides a chance to control your stress and cope better with your day-to-day demands.

A trial short course is being offered in semester 1 on Tuesdays at 5 pm (45 minute class) beginning Tuesday 30 April. Bookings are essential and should be made by contacting the gym on 9770 1495 on the day of the class.

The first four classes are free for all participants. After that, classes will be covered for full gym members or participants can pay as they go.

For more information about Mind, Body, Spirit classes, contact Rosemary Bennett on extn 44226.

Race Day wash out

The stage was set for another great day of racing at the third annual Monash Peninsula Race Day but unfortunately the weather had other ideas.

After heavy, consistent over night rain, the track was declared unfit for racing and the meeting was abandoned.

The mounting yard, which would normally be busy with horses, jockeys and strappers, was uncannily quite.

The roses around the tracked benefited from the downpour
